Man Utd transfer news: £60m defensive ace targeted, 39-goal hotshot drops MUFC hint

The transfer rumour mill doesn’t stop for Man Utd, as they’ve been linked with swoops for two young stars from Europe in Jose Gimenez and Timo Werner.

Jose Mourinho’s season had started in positive fashion in the opening weeks of the campaign, but with regards to their Premier League title push, things have gone a little off course over the past fortnight.

A draw at Liverpool was followed by defeat at Huddersfield on Saturday, leaving the Red Devils five points adrift of rivals Manchester City at the top of the standings.

In turn, it hasn’t taken long for fresh speculation to link the Manchester giants with moves for new targets, one being Gimenez, as per The Express, who claim that the 22-year-old has a £60m release clause in his recently-signed contract.

The Uruguayan defender hasn’t been able to establish himself in Diego Simeone’s starting line-up so far this season, making six appearances in all competitions. However, he does have a bright future ahead of him given the impressive nature of his displays overall, but it looks as though Mourinho wishes to help develop his game at Man Utd.

Calls for a new defender may well have grown louder this weekend given summer signing Victor Lindelof was heavily criticised for his poor display in the loss at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, given the signing of Romelu Lukaku this past summer along with the expected return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from injury in the early part of next year, another forward is arguably not on United’s priority list for now.

However, RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner has done his best to attract interest from the club, as he’s spoken openly about his ambitions of playing in the Premier League in the future, noting that Man Utd were the team he wanted to play for when he was younger.

“As a small boy, you always dream of the huge clubs,” Werner told Sky Sports. “In earlier days, it was Manchester United.

“Then you start to dream of perhaps playing somewhere else sometime.” When asked if he would consider moving to the Premier League, he said: “Yes, for sure.”

The 21-year-old has scored 39 Bundesliga goals in total, while he’s bagged six goals in just eight appearances for the senior Germany side.

His move to Leipzig ahead of last season was undoubtedly the turning point in his short career thus far though, as after a decent but by no means memorable impact at Stuttgart, he scored 21 in 32 outings in all competitions last year and has six in nine so far this season.
