Where has this Ozil been all season?

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has explained why he believes Mesut Ozil was in such improved form against Everton in today’s 5-2 win at Goodison Park.

The Germany international was man of the match as the Gunners routed the Toffees, contributing a goal and an assist and carving the home side’s defence open throughout.

This followed some previously anonymous form from Ozil this term, though in fairness the 29-year-old has also missed much of the campaign through injury.

Still, Wenger now believes his return to peak fitness is behind the former Real Madrid man’s much better display this afternoon as he helped Arsenal get back to winning ways.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Wenger said: ‘The difference is he worked extremely hard physically.

‘When Mesut is in that kind of physical shape, no one questions his class and the quality of his game and that’s what you get.’

Ozil has often had his critics during his four years at the Emirates Stadium, with many questioning if he works hard enough, particularly in the big games.

Wenger was clearly delighted with his effort as well as his quality on the ball in today’s win, and fans will hope it’s the start of an upturn in fortunes for him.

Performances like this will also see supporters call for Ozil to sign a new contract, especially following the Daily Mirror‘s report this week that he’s looking to join rivals Manchester United.
