Liverpool transfer overhaul: 5 January signings to save Jurgen Klopp’s season, including shock Arsenal raid and swoop for £70m Chelsea target

Liverpool look in need of some major surgery.

Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat to Tottenham this weekend shows just how far behind they are this season, and how neglectful the club and manager were in ironing out the team’s flaws during the summer transfer window.

Naby Keita will make a fine addition to the Reds squad for next season, but upgrades are urgently needed now on a side already 12 points behind league leaders Manchester City and surely out of the title running.

Looking weak in several key areas, Liverpool would be well advised to start on their defence but also look to invest in a central midfielder and one or two more attackers.

Here’s a look at five potential targets who could be realistic, and if they manage to bring in any two or three of these their fortunes could really change in the second half of the campaign…

Virgil van Dijk

Targeted by Liverpool all summer, their failure to bring in Virgil van Dijk is seemingly the reason they’re now stuck with Dejan Lovren in central defence.

While the Reds could surely have explored other options to bolster in this problem position, they may as well now do their best to complete the signing of one of Klopp’s preferred targets.

Still, it won’t be easy, with Chelsea said to be interested in the £70million-rated Dutchman as well ahead of January.

Kasper Schmeichel

One of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League on his day, Kasper Schmeichel could surely be lured away from struggling Leicester City this season.

The Dane has been linked with Liverpool and other top clubs in the past and may now feel the time is right for him to move on to bigger and better things having tasted Premier League glory and played in the Champions League with the Foxes.

With Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius fighting for the number one spot at Anfield right now, it’s all the more baffling a deal for someone like Schmeichel was not done during the summer.

Jack Wilshere

A bit of a bold one, but Jack Wilshere has impressed whenever used by Arsenal this season, and could be ideal to fill that midfield gap while Liverpool wait for Keita’s arrival next summer.

The England international would arguably be an upgrade on the likes of Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum on his day, and his future at Arsenal remains in doubt.

Wilshere’s contract is up in the summer and is yet to fully establish himself as a Gunners regular this term. If Liverpool were to come calling, it’s hard to imagine he’d say no, and he could be available on the cheap.

Julian Draxler

Recently linked with Liverpool, Julian Draxler is not currently guaranteed a regular place in the Paris Saint-Germain team, and could therefore be persuaded to make a move away from the club in the near future.

The Germany international is one of the top attacking midfield players in Europe when he’s on form, and would be a great replacement for Philippe Coutinho were he to end up making the move to Barcelona.

Expected to cost around £40million, that looks a potential bargain for Liverpool if rumours of their interest are correct.

Timo Werner

One of the most promising young strikers in Europe at the moment, 21-year-old RB Leipzig front-man Timo Werner has emerged as a reported target for the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The Germany international has five goals in seven Bundesliga games this term and is starting to make waves for his senior national side.

With Roberto Firmino unconvincing as a makeshift centre-forward, Werner could be an ideal addition for Liverpool this January.
