Liverpool plot €25m raid on Serie A giants for defensive solution

Liverpool’s defensive woes have been well documented and heavily criticised, but they could reportedly act in order to partly address the problem.

Having failed to bolster their defensive options this past summer, Jurgen Klopp’s side have continued to be porous at the back, conceding 16 goals in just nine Premier League games so far this season.

That has been a big reason as to why they’re languishing in ninth place in the table at such an early stage in the campaign, and if they harbour ambitions of competing for major trophies moving forward, they’ll surely have to tighten things up at the back.

It’s not a new problem either, as they had one of the worst defensive records of the top six clubs in the league last season too, and so any suggestion that Liverpool are going to bring in new faces to fix the issue would arguably be welcomed by supporters.

As seen in the tweet below, Calciomercato and La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolo Schira, and re-reported by The Express, he has suggested that Liverpool will make a €25m move for Roma left-back Emerson Palmieri, while they’ll offer him a contract which runs until 2022.

The 23-year-old was a key figure for former boss Luciano Spalletti last season, making 36 appearances in all competitions as he impressed in general.

However, what complicates this suggested transfer is the fact that he’s been out since May with a cruciate ligament injury, and so Liverpool will undoubtedly need assurances that he will make a full recovery before splashing out on signing him.

While the centre-half pairing needs to be addressed too, Alberto Moreno has failed to entirely convince from a defensive point of view since moving to Anfield as he has been caught out and been guilty of costly errors on numerous occasions.

In turn, the signing of Palmieri could be a sensible one, but it’s just one move of many that may be needed to fully address the problem for Klopp.
