Pep Guardiola would love to complete shock raid on Chelsea, claims pundit

Pundit and former Chelsea man Pat Nevin believes that he’s heard a significant transfer rumour, claiming Man City are big admirers of Andreas Christensen.

From a City perspective, it’s clear why Pep Guardiola would be targeting a move for a defender, as that appears to be the only department of his squad that needs addressing given their impressive start to the season.

While John Stones is currently sidelined, Vincent Kompany’s injury history doesn’t make for positive reading, leaving the Spanish tactician short of options with Eliaquim Mangala stepping up to partner Nicolas Otamendi.

Guardiola may well have faith in that pairing, but moving forward, Nevin believes that he would love to raid Chelsea for one of their top prospects for the future, but casts immediate doubt over it actually happening.

Christensen returned to Stamford Bridge this past summer after a successful loan spell in Germany, and he’s gradually becoming an important part of Antonio Conte’s plans, with the 21-year-old making 16 appearances in all competitions so far this year.

In turn, it seems highly improbable that Chelsea will allow him to leave, and also for a direct Premier League rival, but Nevin insists that he’s heard a suggestion that City would love to line up a swoop.

“I heard a wee whisper, and I don’t know if it’s true, but the player he would really like more than anyone else is Andreas Christensen from Chelsea,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk, as reported by The Express.

“That’s the one he’d really like. He’s not going to get him but he’s at that sort of age he could to the same thing as [John] Stones.”

Nevin spent five years at Chelsea as a player, making 193 league appearances for the club between 1983 and 1988, and so perhaps he has a source close to Stamford Bridge feeding him the information.

However, as he notes, it’s highly unlikely that Christensen is going anywhere in the near future, as after earning his stripes at Borussia Monchengladbach to prove himself to Chelsea, he’s now displaced David Luiz in Conte’s line-up and looks set for an integral role in the heart of the Blues defence for years to come.

As a result, it’s seemingly nothing more than wishful thinking for Guardiola to be interested in the Danish centre-half, and if he does have a desire to bolster his backline at City, he’ll surely have to look elsewhere.
