Man Utd’s 3-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday was arguably a Premier League classic. However, Paul Pogba would likely disagree after his red card.
The Frenchman was given his marching orders in the second half at the Emirates after a challenge on Hector Bellerin, with replays showing that he had his studs up while the Spaniard went to ground in an unorthodox manner.
Nevertheless, Andre Marriner decided that Pogba would be shown a straight red, and former official and now Sky Sports guest Dermot Gallagher has agreed with the decision.
“I think it’s a red card,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s a tremendous spot by the referee. I didn’t expect a red card until I saw the replay. It’s serious foul play. Where he went was dangerous with excessive force, without doubt it’s a red card.”
The incident will undoubtedly continue to spark debate regardless of what current and former referees think, and it will hurt Pogba specifically given that he’ll be suspended for the visit of Man City on Sunday.
It’s a hugely important clash between the two Manchester clubs as they scrap over the Premier League title this season, and while it may not be decisive, if Pep Guardiola’s men go 11 points clear with a win, it’s difficult to see Man Utd clawing their way back.
During Pogba’s spell on the sidelines in October and November, it was evident how much United missed his presence and power in the middle of the pitch, and they’ll have to make do without him for the next three domestic games now too.
