Manchester United star Ashley Young is reportedly pushing to begin talks with the Red Devils over signing a new contract after his superb form this season.

The England international has been a player reborn under manager Jose Mourinho, having previously fallen out of the first-team picture at Old Trafford.

Now a surprise first choice for Mourinho at left-back, Young looks deserving of a reward from the club as he heads towards the end of his current deal.

This is according to ESPN, who claim United have the option to automatically renew Young’s contract until 2019, though he may feel he wants longer.

Mourinho has a welcome headache at left-back at the moment, with Luke Shaw impressing in Young’s absence as he was handed a surprise start by Mourinho in the Champions League this week.

The Portuguese suggested afterwards that Shaw will continue to get playing time, which may be behind Young’s thinking as he seeks to cement his future at Old Trafford.

‘He (Shaw) was deserving of that opportunity for quite a long time and he’s going to get more because the performance was really positive,’ Mourinho was quoted in the Manchester Evening News after yesterday’s game.
