It seems as though Gareth Bale’s time at Real Madrid may well be coming to an end as speculation continues to link the Welshman with an exit.
The 28-year-old has been blighted by injuries over the last three seasons, going from 48 appearances in the 2014/15 campaign, to 31 the following season before making just 27 outings last year.
He’s been limited to 12 games in all competitions so far this season as he continues to suffer with setbacks, and naturally that has led to question marks over how influential he can be at Real Madrid moving forward.
With Karim Benzema failing to consistently deliver while question marks have been raised over Cristiano Ronaldo especially as he turns 33 next year, Madrid have to start planning for the long-term future and a Bale departure could fund a big move.
According to Diario Gol, as re-reported by The Express, the former Tottenham man will be allowed to leave the Spanish capital if a club pays €90m, with Man Utd and Spurs specifically mentioned in the report.
Whether or not either club is willing to pay that much remains to be seen, as his injury record will surely make it a very risky and potentially expensive gamble.
Nevertheless, Bale can consider his spell with Los Blancos a huge success despite not always being on the pitch to help his teammates, as he collected another FIFA Club World Cup trophy on Saturday after their win over Gremio.
That’s now added to a La Liga title and three Champions League trophies among others, and so while it has been disappointing on a personal level due to injuries, he has had a memorable time at the Bernabeu if he is to have to look back on it next summer when leaving.
Meanwhile, Don Balon, as re-reported by The Express, note that Madrid could use him as a bargaining chip in a bid to land Eden Hazard from Chelsea in a swap deal.
Hazard would certainly address the problem detailed above, but whether Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is a fan of the idea of losing the influential Belgian in favour of Bale is up for debate, and it’s a similar scenario to United in that it’s a risk to trust his fitness even though when at his best, he’s a world-class player.
