Manchester United exit likely to boost Jose Mourinho’s chances of landing top transfer target

Manchester United selling Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Borussia Dortmund could do them some good in their transfer pursuit of German midfielder Julian Weigl.

The 22-year-old has been linked by the Independent as a potential January transfer window target for Jose Mourinho and his name has come up once again.

Another report from the Independent suggest Mkhitaryan is most likely to leave Old Trafford for a return to his former club, and that this could aid the Red Devils in signing Weigl.

Although the report claims a direct swap deal is not on the cards, it could apparently help push negotiations along between the two teams.

With Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini heading towards the ends of their contracts, it makes sense that Mourinho could be looking at a player like Weigl.

The Germany international looks a hugely promising talent in midfield, and could be an ideal long-term solution in that area.

One of the top young players in the Bundesliga, Weigl could be a fine player to eventually replace Nemanja Matic, who, despite his fine form this season, is 29 and may not have that many years left at the highest level.
