Wayne Rooney 'planning to move to new custom-built £10million country mansion close to his Merseyside childhood home' amid rumours of an emotional return to Everton

  • Everton are pressing ahead with a deal to re-sign forward Wayne Rooney

  • Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has made no secret of his desire to seal a deal

Wayne Rooney is planning to move to a new custom-built £10million country mansion close to his childhood home amid rumours of a return to Everton.

Pictures have emerged of the six-bedroom mansion currently being built in the Cheshire countryside with several lorries, diggers and cranes spotted working at the site.

Plans show the house, which is being built on the site of a demolished farm, will have stables which can hold 15 horses, a six-car garage and even an orangery.

The house is just a 30-minute drive from the house her currently shares with wife Coleen in Prestbury and is just 30 miles from Everton’s Finch Farm training ground.

The photos emerged as Everton pressed ahead with a move to re-sign Rooney as he gets set to bring a 13-year stay at Manchester United to an end.

Ronald Koeman has made no secret of his desire to sign the striker, with discussions between the clubs having taken place.

The Toffees saw a loan bid rejected by United in January but have returned this summer after Rooney spent a family holiday in Mykonos mulling over his future.

Sportsmail understands a season-long loan switch, in which both clubs would pay half of the player’s £230,000-a-week wages, has been on the table.

Reports elsewhere suggest Rooney - who only has a year left on his Old Trafford contract - will become an Everton player on a free transfer. Rooney’s representatives declined to comment.

The 31-year-old has always stated that the Blues and United are the only Premier League teams he would play for, with sources telling Sportsmail in March he would seriously consider an offer from Koeman.

That has now been forthcoming and it appears unlikely Rooney will be on the United plane for the pre-season tour of America this Sunday if a resolution is in sight.

Jose Mourinho wants Alvaro Morata in place for the trip and faces the prospect of having Marcus Rashford as their only recognised striker if Rooney departs in the coming days without a replacement.

Everton coach Duncan Ferguson has made it clear to Koeman that the club should do all they can to entice Rooney back to Merseyside.

The England international played in Ferguson’s testimonial at Goodison Park in 2015, with supporters offering him a warm reception.

Everton are also interested in landing Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, with Romelu Lukaku set to depart for either Chelsea or United.

The signings of Michael Keane and Sandro Ramirez this week has taken their spending to over £90million already - with Koeman and director of football Steve Walsh ready to sanction more.
