Rio Ferdinand is priming himself for his boxing debut early next year – and the former Manchester United defender appears to be feeling the strain as his training steps up.

Ferdinand, who earlier last month revealed he was targeting a fight in February, was seen performing press-ups with 50kg weights on his back.

In a video posted on Instagram, trainer Mel Deane wrote: '@rioferdy5 last set and reps of the session with 50 Kgs on his back and my fat hole leaning on him !! Hahah'.

Ferdinand, 39, is hoping to secure a boxing licence next year and although his switch in sport has been written off as a publicity stunt by some he appears to be taking training seriously.

He has also been working with former super-middleweight world champion Richie Woodhall towards earning a boxing licence.

A spokesman for Betfair, the bookmakers behind Ferdinand's move into boxing, said: 'Rio is showing big improvement as he steps up his training on his journey to gain a professional boxing licence.'

Former rugby player Deane has been working with Ferdinand and girlfriend Kate Wright at their home, helping the ex-England captain to boost his fitness after his 2015 retirement from football.

Ferdinand also appears to be targeting a string of fights, rather than just a one-off publicity-spinning bout.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel FIVE, he told former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo his debut would be in February before adding: 'But then after, in June or July, I'll have another fight. You should come.'
