The 26-year-old tweeted a picture of himself in an Arsenal shirt inside the Emirates Stadium with the caption: 'This is my home! Happy to have signed a new four-year-deal. Ready for the season ahead. Thank you to Arsenal and Key Sports Management.'

Arsenal have also confirmed that midfielder Santi Cazorla has extended his stay at the Emirates until 2017 after the club decided to take up the option of another year on his contract.

Cazorla tweeted: 'So happy to have signed a new long-term contract. Thank you to Arsenal and the Arsenal fans.'

Boss Wenger told the club's website: 'We're delighted to have extended the contracts of Santi and Theo.

'Both are top quality players who are hugely important and influential to our squad. As well as their huge contributions on the pitch, they both have a great deal of experience and are very popular off the pitch.

'We're very pleased with them both signing contract extensions, as it provides our squad with further stability of quality.'

Walcott has long stated his desire to play in a central attacking role and will compete with Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck for that slot in Wenger’s side.

Wenger sung Walcott’s praises after the Wolfsburg win, highlighting his ability to play across the front line.

'What's his best position? That’s a good question. It’s a complicated answer,' said Wenger.

'In all the three positions, if you ask him where he loves to play, even he is not certain – it depends a little bit on the periods.

'Sometimes he prefers it on the left because when he makes a good run he can score goals as well.

'I think in his idea, he would love to play with a strong guy next to him in the middle. But we have so many offensive players it is difficult to combine all this together.

'It was another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that because I played him through the middle.

'I’ve always said he’s a goalscorer because he has the movement, he has the timing of the finishing, the speed, he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moment.

'When he gets in these positions he can finish well. He’s not what you call the aggressive striker. He’s the mobile striker.

'The striker who lives from the speed and quality of his movement. But he turns up in the right space in the box.

'You can’t give that to players. He understands well, he anticipates quickly and linked with his speed of execution it makes him always very dangerous.'
