Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed Jack Wilshere has suffered another injury set back, having picked up a hairline crack in his left fibula.

The England international, as revealed by Sportsmail's Sami Mokbel on Wednesday, sustained the lower leg injury during an accidental collision in training and is now expected to be out of action for 'a few weeks.'

The 23-year-old's career has been punctuated by a succession of injuries and will now miss the Premier League opener with West Ham, but Wenger did not suggest a timescale on his recovery.

'The information you have heard about Jack Wilshere is right,' Wenger told Arsenal.com.

'I had a bad surprise because it is a hairline crack in his fibula that makes him a few weeks out.'

Wilshere was absent from Arsenal's Community Shield triumph over Chelsea on Sunday having suffered the unfortunate injury the previous day.

It is the latest blow for the midfielder, who returned to the Gunners first-team fold in May following another lengthy spell out due to a challenge from Manchester United's Paddy McNair in November 2014.

'There is minimal damage apart from the bone damage - there is no damage at all apart from that. It was a collision in training and it was all completely accidental,' added Wenger.

If he requires surgery, Wilshere could be absent for at least two months, meaning the 23-year-old also faces missing England's Euro 2016 qualifying Group E fixtures with San Marino and Switzerland next month.
