Cech won every major honour during 11 years at the Bridge and his loyal service and popularity helped smooth his transfer across London.

Jose Mourinho did not want him to join a direct title rival but Roman Abramovich gave the move his blessing as a parting gift to the goalkeeper.

'For me until the game finished that’s what it is, just the same as another goalkeeper,' said Mourinho.

'After the game, it’s not the same to meet Petr Cech in the tunnel or Ospina or Szczesny or any other guys I don’t have a special connection to.

'If there’s anyone at Chelsea with a different perspective of what football is, who thought Petr Cech against Chelsea would open the goal and let Chelsea win, they understood after the COmmunity Shield that he’s there to win and probably more than ever.

'But at the end, if he wants to come into our dressing room the door is open.'

Chelsea gave warm receptions to Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba on their returns to Stamford Bridge with Manchester City and Galastasaray respectively. Both also have banners in their honour.
