Back in north London, Gunners boss Wenger has been keeping close tabs on Gnabry and believes he can help him reach a higher level when he returns.

'I want to keep Serge Gnabry and extend his contract,' Wenger said at his press conference on Thursday.

'I think we stood by him. He went to West Brom, didn't play, we had to rebuild his confidence. I allowed him to go to the Olympics to help Germany. 

'I think he's here now for a long time.'

Germany will take on Brazil on Saturday, with Gnabry hoping to return to London with a gold medal.
