Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has taken aim at Jurgen Klopp, Chelsea and his own players since heading to Old Trafford - Sportsmail recalls 10 of his moans

Jose Mourinho has never shied away from voicing his disapproval for something through the media.

In a career that has seen him manage successfully across Europe, the Portuguese has frequently engaged in verbal jousting in order to rile opposition or to cajole a response from his own team.

He was confirmed as manager of Manchester United in May and true to form, has been as sharp-tongued as ever in offering his view on the many talking points to have emerged from his first season at Old Trafford. Sportsmail looks at 10 of his best quotes so far.

Mourinho on Pogba transfer criticism

Once the £100m world-record transfer of Paul Pogba was confirmed, managers across the game were asked their view. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said 'the day that this is football, I'm not in a job anymore because it is about playing together', while Arsene Wenger said the fee is 'completely crazy'.

Mourinho responded: 'I know the discussion. I understand that, sometimes in football, things happen and the club breaks the record, but this is only possible at clubs like Man United.

'When I heard some of the comments and heard some of the managers criticising that, I don't think they ever have this problem because, to have this problem, you need to be at one of the top clubs in the world. So at Manchester United, it can happen.'

Mourinho on referees

United endured a rocky start to the Premier League under Mourinho's guidance, with a particular low coming at Vicarage Road on September 18. A 3-1 defeat by Watford handed United their third straight loss in a week. Mourinho was livid at how Watford got their first and was adamant Anthony Martial had been fouled in the build-up.

'One [factor] is the referee's crucial mistakes which I cannot control,' Mourinho said. 'I have nothing to do with it. I can't change that and it's not under my control. Today you know what happened with the first goal. We were punished by this mistake and I can't do anything.

'Lucky and unlucky is part of the game and normally you say lucky gives a lot of work and this is what I really believe. But sometimes there are moments in your favour, which go against you and today our best moment, we were almost winning the game and we lost.

'We have to improve individually and collectively no doubt. That's my job because lady luck you don't control and referee's mistakes we don't control.'

Mourinho on United's commitment after Fenerbahce loss

A 2-1 defeat in Turkey against Fenerbahce in the Europa League left the United boss furious about the effort on show from his team.

They had fallen behind to a second-minute strike by Moussa Sow before Jermain Lens doubled the lead. A goal from Wayne Rooney late on only served as a consolation but this time, Mourinho had no reason to blame the officials.

'I think Fenerbahce deserved to win, but football is not just about quality, it's about effort, commitment, playing the limits and giving everything,' he said.

'Our problem started in our global attitude. Fenerbahce were playing the Champions League final and we were playing a summer friendly.'

Mourinho on injured players

United beat Bob Bradley's Swansea 3-1 in November but Mourinho was in no mood to celebrate afterwards.

His mood had been soured by having to field a patchwork defence of Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian. Mourinho was seemingly unimpressed by the absence of Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw with injury problems.

'There is a difference between the brave, who want to be there at any cost, and the ones for who a little pain can make a difference,' Mourinho said. 'If I were to speak with the many great football people of this team, they will say many times they played without being 100 per cent.

'For the team you have to do anything. That is my way of seeing. We have players with problems. To compete you have to go to the limit. It is cultural for some - and this is my culture. More than me, it is Man United.'

Mourinho on Wenger

Two weeks later, Mourinho was reigniting his rivalry with old foe Wenger. United were denied victory by an 89th minute header from Olivier Giroud in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford and two more dropped points saw United quickly losing ground on the top of the table.

Mourinho was irked by being grilled on his side's fading title challenge compared to Wenger's record at Arsenal.

'I said yesterday at the press conference. The Arsenal manager hasn't won a championship in 14 [sic] years. I haven't won a championship in 18 months.' Mourinho said.

'He, in 14 years, failed to build a team to be champion. I've been here for four months. And the demand is only for me and not for others.'

Mourinho on David de Gea and Louis van Gaal

Mourinho was asked in January for his thoughts on David De Gea potentially winning United's Player of the Season for the fourth successive season.

His response was intriguing and left nobody in any doubt about what he thought of the state of the club before he became manager.

'I think when a goalkeeper is the player of the season it means something is wrong,' Mourinho said. 'I would love my goalkeeper to win the golden glove, they are lonely guys at one end of the field.'

Mourinho on EFL Cup final

United reached their first cup final under Mourinho by beating Hull 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-final of the EFL Cup. They will face Southampton at Wembley, after they eliminated Liverpool 2-0 on aggregate.

Liverpool boss Klopp had cited how the wind at Anfield affected his team's play against Saints, a reason he has used a number of times before. So when Mourinho was asked about his side's chances against Southampton, there was a hint of mischief in his reply.

'I don't think we are favourites against nobody,' he said. 'It doesn't matter against who or where, we are never favourites. Normally the stadium is windy and it's difficult.'

Mourinho on the rules

When Simon Mignolet saved a penalty from Diego Costa in Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League encounter on Jan 31, Klopp turned and roared in the face of the fourth official. He escaped punishment, explaining after that he had apologised and the official told him he liked the German's passion.

This upset Mourinho, who had been ordered to sit down and regain composure after getting animated on the touchline during his team's 0-0 draw with Hull.

'Yesterday, one manager was told by the fourth official "I love your emotion and because I love your emotion, no problem",'Mourinho said. 'I was told today to sit down or I have to go to the stands.

'You simply have to tell the truth. You will be doing a public service I think. Tell the truth. If that means you say Manchester United didn't play well in the first half, so be it. You know clearly that I am different. The rules for me are different. I am different in everything.'

Mourinho on fixtures

A downside for Mourinho after reaching the EFL Cup final is that his side's clash with Manchester City has to be rearranged. With United balancing four competitions in their fixture schedule, Mourinho outlined his frustrations at how his side's games will be organised.

'Liverpool are going to play 16 matches, Chelsea will play 16 matches, plus some in the FA Cup and we are in this crazy situation,' Mourinho said. 'I think Southampton will have 15 days without football before the final and we are going to have in these 15 days two matches against St Etienne (in the Europa League) and the next round of the FA Cup so the calendar in the best country of world football is nonsense.

'In a realistic way I think the Premier League is almost an impossible mission but I just think about winning the next match and the next match is not an impossible mission.'

Mourinho on Chelsea

Mourinho's latest jibe comes against his former club, Chelsea. He hinted at his dissatisfaction at how defensive Chelsea can be set up, which is a curious comment considering his Stamford Bridge teams were hardly free-flowing in attack.

Mourinho said of Chelsea: 'They defend very well and with lots of players and I think in this situation a very defensive team wins the title with counter-attack goals and set pieces goals so I don't think they will let it slip but football is football.'
