Alexis Sanchez must stay professional, insists Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: 'I don't understand anxiety one and a half years before the end of contracts'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists that Alexis Sanchez's contract situation is not a concern and has told the Chilean forward to remain professional and honour his contract.

Sanchez's deal at Arsenal expires in June 2018 and the club have failed so far to reach an agreement over an extension. 

Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are monitoring the player's position and are likely to make summer moves to sign Sanchez.

For Arsenal supporters, it has awakened fears of a repeat of Robin van Persie's exit from the club, when he signed for Manchester United with only twelve months left on his contract.

Wenger, however, insists there is no reason to worry: 'He has one and a half years of contract, I don’t see what suddenly all that debate is about. We are professional football people, I don’t understand.

'Our job is to perform as long as we are somewhere, when I sign a contract I commit until the last day of my contract. And that is what it is to be professional.

'So I do not understand this kind of anxiety one and a half years before the end of contracts. It’s absolutely denying what a professional guy is about.'

Arsenal return to Premier League action at home to West Ham on Wednesday night and they will be without Laurent Koscielny, who went off injured at half-time during the 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

'It is certainly serious, yes, because it’s an Achilles problem,' Wenger said. 'If he’s ruptured a few fibres of his tendon, it could be a few weeks.

'If it’s just an inflammation, he could maybe be available for selection next week against Crystal Palace. At the moment, I think he has a scan today and we’ll know much more tomorrow.'

German Per Mertesacker could be in line for a first appearance of the season in his place, although it is more like that Gabriel will deputise for Koscielny.

Wenger said: 'He is available to play, yes. He’s been out for a long, long time. But he’s been available now for a while, for a long time. He’s worked very hard. Physically, he’s ready but lacks competition.'
