Tottenham may select third-choice keeper Pau Lopez against Watford with Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm doubtful

Pau Lopez is on stand-by for a first Premier League start for Tottenham with doubts over first-choice goalkeepers Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

Lloris missed the 3-1 victory over Swansea on Wednesday after being struck down by a virus and is still being monitored ahead of the home match against Watford on Saturday.

Vorm, meanwhile, has a knee problem and is almost certain to miss the game. Lopez is a 22-year-old Spanish goalkeeper who is on loan from Espanyol.

Spurs' first-choice goalkeepers Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm are doubts for the encounter

Lopez was Espanyol's first choice keeper in La Liga last season and also made Vicente Del Bosque's preliminary squad for the 2016 European Championship.

Lopez hit the headlines last season when was alleged to have stamped on Lionel Messi during Espanyol's 4-1 defeat by Barcelona. He had already clashed with Luis Suarez in the first-half, with both players cautioned.

Lopez had been angered when Turkish midfielder Arda Turan came close to colliding with the goalkeeper's head when challenging for a 50-50 ball. As tempers frayed in the second half, Lopez then appeared to stamp on Messi's leg in a collision in the 54th minute.

He is on a season-long loan deal at Tottenham and the deal contains the option of making the transfer permanent in a £6m deal.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino said: 'We have Pau Lopez, who is ready to compete. We will see tomorrow who is available. Pau is ready to play.

'He is training with us, he has played with the U23 side and played twice for Spain's U21 team against Denmark and Italy. He is very young and we believe in him and trust in him. He's a keeper that can cope with the pressure.'
