Manchester United's hopes of signing Antoine Griezmann have been dashed after the Frenchman has agreed an improved new deal at Atletico Madrid, according to AS.

Griezmann was top of United's shopping list this summer but with Atletico's transfer ban upheld the player has opted to reaffirm his loyalty by taking a new offer at the club.

The 26-year-old penned a deal at the club three months ago which would see him stay at the club until 2021, but it appears the club have now had to up his wages again to keep him in Madrid this summer.

The forward has accepted the improved offer which was made to him three weeks ago when the club were inundated with offers from some of Europe's elite — namely United. 


Upon the news of Atletico's ban being implemented, the Frenchman shared a picture of himself on Twitter in an Atletico shirt, alongside the caption: 'Now more than ever #Atleti #AllTogether.'

The Madrid club are banned from recruiting players this summer but are hopeful that Griezmann's signature will act as a pull for the likes of Diego Costa, Sandro and Vitolo next January.

AS report that sources close to the club have confirmed the player will be there next year and chief executive Miguel Angel Gil will now work to keep fellow forward Fernando Torres in the Spanish capital next term.
