Jose Mourinho deserves to be called the 'Special One' because he's a proven winner, according to Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Portuguese manager famously gave himself the 'Special One' moniker upon his arrival in England in 2004, when he was appointed by Chelsea for the first time.

Mourinho had a mixed first season at United this year, finishing sixth in the Premier League, but he ended the campaign on a high by clinching the Europa League - beating Ajax 2-0 in the final last month.

The win meant Mourinho has won three trophies in 2016-17 - the Europa League adding to the EFL Cup and Community Shield.

And Pogba insists his manager has lived up to his 'Special One' title by delivering on his promise of silverware at Old Trafford.

'He is The Special One because he wins,' Pogba told Sky Germany via Goal.

'Sometimes he does some extreme things. Against Chelsea, he changed our tactical formation just before the game. We had never trained it before but it worked out well. That was special.

'He won three trophies in his first year, that's special as well. He deserves his name.'

Pogba faced criticism for some below-par performances this season but he was fiercely defended by Mourinho - who claimed his player was being victimized due to his £89million price tag.

And the France international said he has appreciated the support from Mourinho, explaining that the United boss made him feel welcome at Old Trafford right away.

'He's a manager who is really close with the players,' said the 24-year-old.

'Personally, he welcomed me, we had a talk and I had a good feeling from the first moment on. He trusted and defended me. That's all a player needs.'
