Matteo Darmian casts doubt over his Manchester United future: 'I have a contract so let's see what happens'

  • Matteo Darmian was part of Manchester United's Europa League-winning team
  • But he only made 15 starts for the Red Devils in the Premier League last season
  • He has two years remaining on his contract and has been asked about his future
  • Defender Darmian replied: 'I have a contract so let's see what happens.'

Matteo Darmian has cast doubt over his Manchester United future as he continues to be linked with a return to Serie A.

The Italian international defender finished last season at left back for the Red Devils and played an important role in their Europa League final success over Ajax, but only started 15 Premier League games under Jose Mourinho.

Darmian has two years remaining on the deal he signed following his move from Torino in 2015, but with old club AC Milan linked with a potential move, there are question marks over his future at Old Trafford.

He was asked about his situation following Italy's 3-0 friendly win against Uruguay on Wednesday and stopped short of confirming he will still be at Old Trafford next season.

'Surely this is not the moment to talk about the transfer market,' Darmian said. 'I wouldn't know what to answer.

'I have a contract with Manchester United, so let's see what happens.'

Darmian was delighted to end what proved to be a stop-start season with a trophy, as he played the full 90 minutes in Stockholm.

He said: 'That night in Stockholm was an important night,' Darmian added. 'It was a real pleasure to me to win the Europa League. I have enjoyed that victory during my days off and I am 100 per cent focused on the national team.

'It's well known that playing at Manchester United brings with it a lot of competition so you need to accept the choices made, keep working as I did, and then I have reaped the benefits at the end of the season.

'We have won a Europa League and this is what makes me go forward, this is my mentality and I will keep going this way.'
