Chelsea could make Alex Sandro the most expensive defender of all time this summer – but the Juventus left back is used to the sort of expectation that such a move would carry.

The Premier League champions have had an initial approach, understood to be worth around £55.2million, rebuffed by Juventus – but even the Italian giants admit the situation is not entirely in their hands.

Sandro, 26, has been compared to Brazil legend Roberto Carlos, faced competition from Patrice Evra and has proven to be by far the outstanding performer of former club Porto's recent raft of sales.

In signing him, Chelsea and Antonio Conte would recruit a player well-accustomed to filling big boots and justifying big moves.

Here, OLIVER TODD looks at what £55m-worth of left back might be able to offer Conte's champions from the left flank

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is adamant that Olivier Giroud still has a big role to play for the club next season.

The France striker endured a frustrating 2016-17 campaign, starting just 17 games in all competitions for the north London outfit despite still managing to score an impressive 16 times.

KIT HOLDEN: Few footballers could be dissatisfied with the season Robert Lewandowski has just had.

The Polish striker has scored 43 goals, won a fifth Bundesliga title, and been voted 'player of the season'.

Yet Lewandowski is no ordinary footballer, and the 28-year-old feels he has every reason to complain this summer.

Earlier this month, Bayern Munich's star striker launched a scathing attack on his team-mates, accusing them of lack of support on the final day of the Bundesliga season.

In the race to be crowned Germany's top scorer, Lewandowski was neck-and-neck with Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the last weekend, but failed to score in a 4-1 win over Freiburg.

Aubameyang walked away with the prize, and Lewandowski was left seething.

Michael Edwards, Liverpool's sporting director, has continued in negotiations with Monchi, his counterpart in Rome, and a deal has now been structured that with add-ons, will see Liverpool pay more than the £35m they invested in Andy Carroll in January 2011. The final fee may be closer to £40m.
