Michael Carrick has opened the door to another five years at Manchester United after admitting he could follow Ryan Giggs' lead and play past his 40th birthday.

The 35-year-old signed a one-year extension to his deal at Old Trafford last month after another consistent season in the United midfield.

Carrick believes he will have to take each season as it comes, but says he has taken encouragement from the longevity of former stars Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Giggs.

'I haven't got an age in mind really, I need to just take it year by year,' the United midfielder told Sky Sports.

'I said that last year, I said it the year before and I will say it again next year too. I have learnt a lot off of Giggsy and the likes of Scholes and Gary Neville, who went on to play until their late 30s.

'I have been lucky enough to see that close to waters and I have taken things from that and tried to learn from it. It might take me as long as Giggsy [to retire], but I'm not too sure.'

The former England international has already written his name into Old Trafford folklore and enjoyed his testimonial last summer, even scoring an equalising goal from 25 yards in front of a capacity crowd.

While Jose Mourinho still sees Carrick as an important part of his first team, he will have to prove himself all over again if he is to earn a new contract this time next season.

Even then, Carrick is unlikely to be short of offers if he does decide to continue his career after leaving Manchester United while his dream of playing for boyhood club Newcastle United is still yet to be fulfilled.

He made 38 appearances for Manchester United last season, helping them to an EFL Cup and Europa League double, adding to his five Premier League titles.
