Cristiano Ronaldo should move to the Premier League if he leaves Real Madrid because 'it's the right place for him', insists Raul Meireles

Cristiano Ronaldo should consider returning to the Premier League if he leaves Real Madrid this summer, according to his Portugal team-mate Raul Meireles.

Ronaldo was reportedly considering his future at the Bernabeu after being accused of tax fraud by the Spanish authorities earlier this month.

Manchester United remain cautious over a potential move for their former player and Jose Mourinho is instead focusing on his original list of transfer targets.

But Meireles believes that if Ronaldo leaves Madrid for England, United shouldn't be the only club he considers joining.

'Yes of course [he could return to the Premier League],' Meireles, who played in England with Liverpool and Chelsea, told Sky Sports via Goal.

'He was very successful in the Premier League so I think that if he does not want to stay at Real Madrid, or he wants to leave, then the Premier League is the right place for him to be.

'He played before at Manchester United, so it could be them, but I think any team. Chelsea? I do not know, but he can play for any team in the Premier League.'

The Ballon d'Or holder could now be willing to pay the £12.9million tax bill to avoid any subsequent fines, though he is not willing to admit any wrongdoing.

Ronaldo is currently on international duty with Portugal at the Confederations Cup in Russia, where he has scored twice in the opening three games.

The 32-year-old enjoyed another stunning season for Madrid as he helped Zinedine Zidane's side complete a La Liga and Champions League double.

Meireles meanwhile, who has 73 caps, has not been included in Portugal's Confederations Cup squad and is without a club since leaving Fenerbahce in 2016.
