Manchester United legend Gary Neville has expressed his shock that the future of the club's all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney still remains to be resolved.
Rooney is expected to depart Old Trafford this summer after falling way down the pecking order under Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils are still yet to deliver any definitive stance regarding their top earner however, meaning the confusion surrounding the future direction of Rooney's career remains rife.
Gary Neville is surprised Manchester United haven't resolved Wayne Rooney's future
For Neville this is an issue.
'You don't want to create voids for speculation around such big players,' the former United captain told the BBC.
'I am surprised it has not been dealt with.
'You don't want that speculation to hang over a pre-season because every single press conference and media session will be clogged up with the issue of whether he is staying or going.'
United's all-time record scorer Rooney is widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer
United's first team are due to return to training next week, on July 8, to begin to prepare for their pre-season campaign.
Rooney has already returned to training, cutting his holidays short in order to work on his fitness after ending the season with lingering injury concerns.
The 31-year-old will be joined by his team-mates at Carrington before the United squad will then leave for Los Angeles the following day to start a five-game tour of the United States.
Matches in Oslo and Dublin are also set to follow.
The striker has been enjoying a holiday in Ibiza with his family while he awaits any news
Rooney has already previously stated he has no ambition to play for any other Premier League club apart from Everton, and appears to have few options in the MLS after LA Galaxy confirmed they hold no interest.
Offers from the Chinese Super League are believed to have arrived at Rooney's door but, while his stock in Asia is incredibly high, the United captain has given little sign that he is ready to move to the Far East.
