Manchester United's hopes of signing Nemanja Matic from Chelsea could yet hinge on Antonio Conte being allowed to bring in another midfielder.
Conte has been keen to sign players ahead of a more challenging season and has lined up Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco but still wants another quality midfield addition before allowing Matic to team up with Jose Mourinho.
Conversely, Chelsea's hierarchy are looking to offload players to offset their planned spending with Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Nathan Ake due to be sold.

Chelsea are hoping to tempt Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko to Stamford Bridge
Question marks remain over Michy Batshuayi, Kurt Zouma and Nathaniel Chalobah, who are wanted on loan or permanently. Torino are keen on Chalobah.
Conte, as well as Bakayoko and £60m-rated Juventus left back Alex Sandro, wants at least one striker, a winger and a centre back.
Sportsmail understands United would have to pay up to £40million if they pursue their interest in Matic, while Mourinho is also interested in Bakayoko and Tottenham's Eric Dier.
The fee for the Serbian seems excessive for a player who will turn 29 this summer and only has two years left on his current deal, but Chelsea will not sell to one of their Premier League rivals on the cheap.
Matic battled with Cesc Fabregas for a starting place but could be reunited with Jose Mourinho
Conte is keen on freshening up his squad and will allow players to leave to offset the incomings
