West Ham must buy experienced firepower, warns co-chairman David Gold

West Ham United are focused on adding quality strikers to the squad as their current forwards continue to struggle with recurring injury problems, the Premier League club's joint-chairman David Gold has said.

Strikers Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho scored a combined eight league goals last campaign as they were plagued with injuries and the London side were heavily reliant on midfielders Michail Antonio and Manuel Lanzini to make up the deficit.

Birmingham close to signing Marc Roberts from Barnsley

LAURIE WHITWELL: Harry Redknapp is close to completing the signing of Marc Roberts from Barnsley for £3.5million.

The Birmingham City manager turned his attentions to Barnsley's captain after missing out on John Terry to Aston Villa.

Birmingham have been negotiating with Barnsley for a number of days and a fee has now been struck for the 26-year-old centre-back.

Hull City made a late bid to gazump Birmingham but Redknapp is hopeful of announcing the transfer before the squad take part in their first training session on Monday.

Roberts, who had one year remaining on his Barnsley contact, has been much sought-after following a fine season at Oakwell, with Derby County previously registering and interest.

Redknapp has been determined to strengthen his defence and made a lucrative but ultimately unsuccessful offer to Terry.

But this move is further evidence that Birmingham's owners, Trillion Trophy Asia, are prepared to back the former Tottenham manager in the transfer market.

Redknapp has already signed goalkeeper David Stockdale on a free transfer and is also looking to add a striker.

Inter Milan 'set to keep' Man United target Ivan Perisic

Inter Milan directors have blocked Manchester United's pursuit of Ivan Perisic as the Italians are confident they will not have to sell the winger to avoid financial fair play (FFP) sanctions, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Serie A outfit have until the end of Friday to raise €30million (£26m) or face a €7million (£6m) fine for breaching UEFA's FFP rules, meaning United were waiting in the wings to exploit them and land Perisic.

Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata failed to score against the top four in La Liga last season... so should Man United fans be worried?

BEN GROUNDS: Manchester United moved a step closer to completing a deal worth up to £60million for Alvaro Morata after the Real Madrid forward cut short his honeymoon in Ibiza this week - but is he worth the fee?

Morata has emerged as Jose Mourinho primary target in attack, and the United manager is determined to be reunited with the Spain international this summer at Old Trafford, but he is yet to prove himself as a big-game player.

With the 24-year-old deemed surplus to requirements at Madrid by Zinedine Zidane, the striker is expected to move a step closer to a move to the Premier League, and United are currently in talks with the Spanish and European champions.

But should Morata become the latest Spaniard to ply his trade in England, he will bring with him a rather undeserved reputation as a small-time player, scoring most of his goals for Madrid last season against sides in the bottom half of La Liga.
