Newcastle United have made an enquiry for Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Rafa Benitez wants the England international to give his newly-promoted squad a firm foundation in the Premier League.

Newcastle have considered Pepe Reina at Napoli and Hart's former City clubmate Willy Caballero, who joined Chelsea on Saturday, as they look to increase competition for Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot.

Benitez has been growing frustrated at the club's inability to bring in transfer targets so far despite owner Mike Ashley saying he would be support his manager with a competitive budget in the transfer window.


Newcastle made their former Under 21 scout Steve Nickson head of recruitment on Saturday and he will be charged with driving more deals over the line. 

However, Newcastle are also looking to offload players first with the likes of Grant Hanley and Daryl Murphy made available.

Hart, 30, has interest from West Ham also who wish to take him on loan but they will struggle to match his wages.

Manchester United and Chelsea have Hart on their shortlists should they lose David de Gea or Thibaut Courtois respectively.
