Security staff protecting Jose Mourinho and Manchester United on their pre-season tour of America will have to observe a complete alcohol ban for the full duration of their 18-day stay.

The dozen specialist minders hired by United for the trip – which are in addition to regular security provided by US authorities - have been warned they will be sent home immediately if they have a drink, even when they have finished a shift.

'For a tour like this, you can never fully regard yourself as off-duty. A beer is not allowable regardless of the time or place for the entirety of the visit,' said a well-placed source.

United's security is provided by well-established firm Controlled Events Solutions (CES) which was founded in 1989 in the aftermath of Hillsborough.

Their job is to provide a cocoon around the United squad from the moment they take off from Manchester Airport to Los Angeles today (Sunday) until they return home on July 27.

United will have a week's training in California before playing their first match on July 15 against LA Galaxy. From there, they will have matches against Real Salt Lake (in Sandy, Utah), Real Madrid (Santa Clara, California) and Barcelona (Washington).

Terrorism claimed three lives at a France-Germany game at the Stade de France in 2015 and last season the Borussia Dortmund team coach was attacked, injuring one player, before a Champions League tie against Monaco.

United are taking no chances and conduct regular sweeps of all hotels and locations where the team is gathered with extra personnel provided by US police and stadium officials on match days.
