Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City, International Champions Cup RESULT: Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford score for Jose Mourinho

  • United beat City in Houston, Texas to claim the Manchester bragging rights
  • Romelu Lukaku put United ahead after a poor piece of goalkeeping from Ederson
  • Marcus Rashford added a second two minutes later to put United in control

Five thousand miles away from home, Manchester United took the local bragging rights in the first ever derby to played outside England.

After a relatively even first half-hour, United took control of the tie with two goals in the space of two minutes just before half-time.

Lukaku opened the scoring in the 37th minute, meeting a long ball in front of City goalkeeper Ederson - who had unwisely sprinted out of his box in an effort to clear - before finishing on the half-volley from a tight angle.

Two minutes later, rash defending became Rashford scoring, as England international Marcus latched onto Henrikh Mkhitaryan's pass and, left all alone on the right of the City penalty area, guided the ball beyond Ederson.

That's all folks

Thanks for joining me for this International Champions Cup friendly.

CHRIS WHEELER's match report will be winging its way over to the site very shortly and it can be found by clicking RIGHT HERE.

See you all soon for more pre-season action!

04:57
FT: Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City

All over in Houston and United take the bragging rights... 5,000 miles from home.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford got the all-important goals.

04:56
Into added time

We're into two minutes of added time. After a gazillion substitutions you'd hope we'd get a little longer.

04:49
Romero saves

85 mins: City pushing hard. Fernandinho with the long-range piledriver which is tipped over by Romero.

04:49
Class from Nasri

84 mins: Stunning pass using the outside of his right boot by Nasri, but it's just caused Jesus to stretch for the ball and the Brazilian guides his volley over.

04:44
GOOOO... offside

78 mins: Jones has three swipes at the ball a yard in front of Ederson, who saves three times. Lukaku lashes in but United's joy is short-lived. Jones was offside.

04:41
Ch ch ch ch changes

Zinchenko has come on for City and we're about to get Pereira and Fosu-Mensah for United. That just about brings us up to date.

04:39
Chance for City

73 mins: Romero punches clear but, under pressure from Diaz, he gets no distance and he gets a little lucky when the ball is lobbed narrowly over by Foden.

04:36
Game is slowing

It's all calmed down a little inside the NRG Stadium. I'd say the humidity and heat was having an impact but there are pretty much two new teams out there now.

04:30
Pogbaaaaa! Side-netting

64 mins: Pogba, one of few United players to have started the game and still be on the pitch, toys with the City defence before launching a stinging effort at goal from 18 yards out, which causes the side-netting to ripple.

One half of the ground thinks the Frenchman has scored. They are disappointed.

04:27
United substitutions

Fellaini, Carrick and Martial enter the fray. Mourinho has almost made 11 changes now.

04:22
Pep not so pepped up
Pep Guardiola
04:20
Mangala booked

Rashford has Mangala on toast and the City defender has to haul him down rugby style to stop him getting beyond him.

You can't do that. Yellow card.

04:18
OFF THE BAR!

52 mins: Well, the angle between crossbar and post. It's a fizzing effort from Lukaku and Ederson is totally beaten. The frame of the goal is still shaking as the ball drifts out towards the far touchline.

04:17
Red faces all round... nearly

51 mins: Almost a very embarrassing moment for Ederson, who finds himself backtracking furiously to prevent Rashford's mis-hit cross from looping into his net.

Meanwhile, the hard-working stadium announcer is still reading out half-time substitutions - a full six minutes into the second period.

And he's still yapping away as Lukaku powers a free header well wide.

04:15
More substitutions

Darmian and Jones are also involved in the game now for United, and Diaz and Jesus are also thrown on by Guardiola.

Struggling to keep up here!

04:10
Here we go again

Can City get back into this?

04:10
Substitutions all over the place

Nasri and Mangala, Sane and Otamendi are all on for City. There's Stones as well.

Romero has come on between the sticks for United, and Bailly is in play too.

03:52
HT: Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City

We have reached the break in Houston. Lukaku and Rashford have put United in control. More soon.

Romelu Lukaku of Manchester United celebrates after scoring
03:51
Blind booked

Your attention please, Daley Blind is booked for hacking at Roberts' ankles like he was an unwanted weed.

03:49
Toure booked

Yaya Toure gets his name taken for a late challenge in midfield and the stadium announcer loves it.

'Can I have your attention please,' he cries over the booming PA system as Toure's name flashes up in lights on the big screen.

Again... this is a pre-season friendly.

03:48
Sportsmail's JACK GAUGHAN in Houston

Somewhere, Claudio Bravo is raising an eyebrow and smirking ever so slightly...

03:46
De Gea saves

41 mins: Foden comes ever so close to pulling a goal back and De Gea has to fling himself to his right to push the ball out for a corner.

03:44
GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City (Rashford 39)

Yikes. Penny for Ederson's thoughts. He's been beaten twice in two minutes after Rashford is left in acres of space down the right, collects Mkhitaryan's pass and guides the ball home.

03:42
GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City (Lukaku 37)

A poor piece of goalkeeping from Ederson, who fails to get to the ball after charging out of his area. Lukaku steals in and guides home a tremendous finish, on the half-volley and from a tight angle.

03:37
Smalling to the rescue

30 mins: Chaos in the United box as Roberts is left all alone 12 yards from goal. Smalling gets back with a crucial sliding tackle and intervene.

03:36
Dress-down day

Pep Guardiola, there, hailing a taxi after his evening out at the tapas bar.

03:34
Pogba goes for goal

28 mins: Save number four for Ederson, this time an easy grab from Pogba's very long range free-kick.

03:31
De Gea to the rescue

26 mins: Whatever Ederson can do, De Gea can do 20 times more acrobatically. The Spaniard leaps high to his right to tip Sterling's strike over the top. Corner.

03:30
Herrera shoots...

24 mins: Ederson saves again! It's a routine effort from Herrera - 25 yards out and straight at the keeper - but City's new signing will be happy with his work so far.

03:29
Jose the Giant

Who's up for a photo that makes Mr Mourinho look 25-foot tall?

You are? Great.

03:27
United again

21 mins: Valencia weaves in from the right and picks out the run of Mkhitaryan, whose appearing all over the park like an out-of-control Splat The Rat. The Armenian fires at Ederson, who punches clear.

03:24
Rashford's first sniff

18 mins: Rashford finds a bit of space on the edge of the box but his shot is snuffled by De Bruyne's boot and the ball trickles out of play.

03:19

Phil Foden has always looked lively when I've seen him for the Under 18s and he's already looking sharp this evening. Never fazed by anything, he's calling for possession constantly.

Manchester City's Vincent Kompany, right, tackles Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku
03:15
Sterling effort

Seven mins: City have their first shot on goal - from Sterling, who might be 5,000 miles from home but is getting booed just as vigorously. It's saved by De Gea.

03:14
Here's Drake with the matchball... just because

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of pre-season friendlies...

03:12
United in charge

Six mins: Guardiola looks very casual on the City bench in his white T-shirt. He doesn't look all that impressed with his side's start to this one, and they've certainly been second best so far. And a little off the pace.

Mkhitaryan has a dig from range but this is in field goal territory.

03:10
Ederson in action

Three mins: Ederson - who is playing in goal, don't worry about that - makes his first save as a City player, pushing over a stinging shot from Ander Herrera.

03:07
Well, it's certainly novel
03:06
Houston, we have lift-off

Let's play!

03:05
Watt's up?

Houston Texans' JJ Watt is out on the NRG Stadium pitch for a few photo opps ahead of kick-off. Come on lads, let's play.

While we wait... here's JJ looking pumped:

Very little noise as the teams come out with Drake clutching the matchball. This is such a weird atmosphere...

03:02
Big entrance

The NRG stadium is plunged into darkness. Fear not, football fans, it's no power cut. It's a pre-match light display. Obviously.

This is all very dramatic for a pre-season friendly.

At my local club (Swindon Town), we don't often bother opening more than half a stand for these things. Tonight... lasers, spotlights, 70,000 fans and a luminous International Champions Cup logo in the centre circle.

03:00
Pre-match words from Pep

'All the big teams play big games straight away and that's what we're doing. I hope we can give a good game and all the people can enjoy it.'

So do we Pep, so do we.

Jose Mourinho quite rightly played down any sort of added spice to this game an hour or so ago but isn't planning on making wholesale changes at half-time as in the previous friendlies. Probably about five or six...

02:46
Walker's debut

A first sighting in a City shirt of Kyle Walker following his move from Tottenham... all £54million of him.

His clash with Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be fascinating* tonight.

Was here this time last night to watch City train and the young goalkeeper Aro Muric is an absolute giant. Huge, dwarfing new signing Ederson.

Fair to assume Muric may get a few minutes tonight and Pep Guardiola has high hopes for him. The manager's even joked that the 18-year-old could play centre half if need be...

Juan Mata, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young are all down as substitutes tonight even though all four are injured and haven’t travelled to Houston.

Tight security

Not an airport... but the security ring around the NRG Stadium.

Judging by the reception given to both teams as they come out to warm up, there’s no doubt who has more fans in the stadium tonight.

A chorus of boos for City, cheers for United. There are a lot more blue shirts around than there would have been a few years ago, though.

02:32
Jose's looking forward to this training session

So, what are you expecting, Jose?

'A good training session. More difficult but that's what you need after MLS teams.'

Don't ever change Mr Mourinho.

‘Manchester is Red’ reads one placard picked up by the cameras here. And Houston is hot. Hot and very humid. Thankfully we’ve got the roof on the stadium tonight so the playing conditions will be ideal.

Big round of applause from the United fans for Jose Mourinho as he makes an appearance. The United boss responds with a bashful wave.

02:29
'I drove 14 hours to watch Man United'

A fan in the stand has a sign which reads: 'I drove 14 hours to watch Man United'.

Alright fella, enough of the bragging.

A strange mix of support today - with City and United replica shirts mingling in the same stands. You won't see that during the coming season.

One by one, the club ‘legends’ are being interviewed on the pitch at the NRG Stadium. First Dwight Yorke (even though they spelled his name wrong on the big screen) and now Paul Dickov. There are 40 minutes to go until kick-off.

02:19

Jose Mourinho insists his bitter rivalry with Pep Guardiola is a thing of the past as the two men prepare for the Manchester derby in Houston.

A friendship fostered at Barcelona in the 1990s was ruined when Guardiola was given the coach’s job at the Nou Camp in 2008 ahead of Mourinho who then took over at Real Madrid.

They fell out spectacularly during Mourinho’s three-year stint in Spain, but the Manchester United boss believes it was stoked by the rivalry between the two clubs and will not re-surface in England.

Jose Mourinho picks a strong side out in Houston...

01:55

Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola will oversee the first ever Manchester derby played on foreign soil at the NRG Stadium in Houston.

City and United saw last summer's friendly called off in farcical circumstances over in China but will finally lock horns abroad.

Here, Sportsmail looks at what sort of shape the two sides are in ahead of kick-off in the early hours of Friday morning.

CHRIS WHEELER: Manchester City fans will have to subscribe to MUTV if they want to watch the Manchester derby in Houston on Friday.

United’s in-house TV station is the only rights holder in the UK and Ireland for the first derby to be played on foreign soil – meaning that City fans will have little choice but to pay the monthly subscription of £7 if they want to tune in.

Or you can keep up to date with Sportsmail. Your choice.

01:39
Who will we see in action?

Here are the two touring squads from which Pep and Jose can pick their sides tonight...

Manchester United tour squad: De Gea, Romero, J Pereira, Bailly, Blind, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Darmian, Rojo, Fosu-Mensah, Lindelof, Tuanzebe, Mitchell, Pogba, Herrera, Fellaini, Carrick, Mata, Young, Valencia, Mkhitaryan, McTominay, A Pereira, Lukaku, Rashford, Martial, Lingard.

Manchester City tour squad: Ederson, Grimshaw, Muric, Walker, Adarabioyo, Stones, Otamendi, Denayer, Kolarov, Kompany, Maffeo, Mangala, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Sane, Fernandinho, Garcia, Nasri, Silva, Sterling, Toure, Zinchenko, Jesus, Aguero, Moreno, Roberts.

Sportsmail's man in Texas, JACK GAUGHAN, reports there won't be wholesale changes at half-time but, and it's a big but, Mourinho has been playing down the derby element of the game.

He's treating it like a training session. Which, basically, it is.

The scene is set in Houston
