Manchester's two famous football clubs put their rivalry aside in memory of the victims of terrorism during their Stateside friendly.

United and City both wore custom-made shirts bearing the worker bee of the north-west city for the clash at the NRG Stadium in Houston.

The bee, which was added to Manchester's coat of arms in the mid 19th century and represents the industrial heritage of the region, has been used as a symbol of strength following the Manchester Arena attack in May.

WHY IS A BEE THE SYMBOL OF MANCHESTER?

Despite looking more like a wasp, the bee has become of symbol of the city of Manchester.

The logo depicts a worker bee and represents the city’s hard-working past during the Industrial Revolution.

It is thought the bee was chosen because the factories in the city were 'hives of activity'

And following the International Champions Cup meeting between the sides in Texas, United and City will auctioned off to raise money for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.

The money from the fund will help the families of the 22 people who died and the 64 people who were injured when suicide bomber Salman Abedi blew himself up at the end of an Ariana Grande concert.

United and City have already pledged £1million to the victims between them.

'The city of Manchester has shown great strength and unity since the tragic terror attack in May, showing the country and the world how special this city really is,' United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said.

'Having the worker bee on our shirts once again shows the community spirit of our city and football club and it is only natural that we continue to help all of those affected, through this fundraising and awareness, with millions of fans across the world watching this game.'

Manchester United took control of the game with two goals in two first-half minutes in Houston.

Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring after a goalkeeping mistake by Ederson before Marcus Rashford crashed home a second just before half-time.

It was the first time the historic fixture has been played outside of UK shores.
