Wayne Rooney and his Everton team-mates arrived at Royal Birkdale in time for the final day of The Open, hours after touching down from their recent pre-season clash against Genk.

Rooney was joined by Gareth Barry, Phil Jagielka, Michael Keane and Leighton Baines as he arrived to see the climax of Britain's most famous golfing event.

The Toffees striker posted an image to social media showing himself and his comrades smiling happily while posing with the Claret Jug, which will be awarded to the victorious golfer on Sunday evening.

Captioning the snap Rooney wrote: 'Day at the Open with the lads.'


The former Manchester United man looks to be settling well with the Toffees, getting to know his new team-mates while doing the business out on the field.

Rooney is no stranger to having his abilities questioned, but has made a solid start to life back in the famous blue of Everton.

The 31-year-old struck a sublime effort in his first game for Everton during a pre-season friendly in Tanzania, before adding to his tally in the recent clash with Genk.

The Toffees played out a 1-1 stalemate with the Belgian side, with Rooney getting among the goals once again.

Everton started the game with a strong tempo and a fizzed cross across the face of goal found Rooney, who arrived at the back post to turn his effort from eight yards.

Upon their return to the UK Everton were swamped by fans who were keen for photographs and autographs.
