Michael Keane insists he can cope with scrutiny and pressure after becoming a significant footnote in football’s summer of unprecedented spending.

The England international, who was the subject of interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, became Everton’s club record signing after Burnley sold him for a fee that could go beyond £30million.

This has been the most ambitious transfer window in Everton’s history, with the club expected to sign at least two more players before August 31 with Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson the next priority.

It has led expectations to soar at Goodison Park but Keane is relishing the opportunity to play his part and isn’t flustered by the amount of money Everton invested in him.

‘I don’t feel like price tag is hanging over my head at all,’ said Keane. ’It doesn’t even seem like a load of money when you think of some of the transfer fees. That’s just the way football is going.

‘I know, obviously, it is a massive amount. But I’m not going to let it affect me and I don’t think it will. I feel like I have slotted in nicely and I want to be a big part going forward. We want to achieve something big this season.’

Keane will make his competitive debut for Everton in Thursday’s Europa League qualifier against Slovakian side Ruzomberok and he has credited Ronald Koeman for making his transition so easy.

‘The manager has played at the highest level in world football,’ Keane explained. ‘So for him to be talking to me every day, giving me advice is invaluable. I just have to keep listening and learning.’

Everton warmed up for that fixture with a 1-1 draw against Genk on Saturday that saw Wayne Rooney score his second goal in three games since returning. The former England captain will start against Ruzomberok.
