Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he regrets the fact his club sold Javier Hernandez.

The Mexican striker has returned to the Premier League after agreeing a £16million move to West Ham United.

The player, known as 'Chicarito', was sold before Mourinho's time at Old Trafford, and while the Portuguese boss said he made no attempt to bring the forward back to Manchester, he also thinks it is a shame he does not have Hernandez at his disposal.

Mourinho said: 'I am not sure if it was his decision or the manager's decision, but he's a good player, he's a player that will always score goals, so he is a player I would always welcome in my squad because he doesn't need many minutes on the pitch to score a goal.

'We moved in another direction and a younger player in (Romelu) Lukaku. We have (Marcus) Rashford that can be also a striker, he is originally a striker, so we didn't feel that need.

'No doubt that for West Ham to get a player with his experience and his quality is very, very good.'

Hernandez proved his goal-scoring potential during two seasons with Bayer Leverkusen

Mourinho's comments also represent another criticism of the tenure of his United predecessor, Louis van Gaal.

It was van Gaal who two summers ago opted to allow Hernandez to go, and sold him to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

He impressed in Germany, scoring 39 goals in 76 games and firing Leverkusen into the Champions League during his first year.

Now he has returned, Hernandez will be lining up against United on the opening weekend when West Ham visit Mourinho's men.
