Tottenham are yet to spend a single penny in the transfer window... so, if there are no new arrivals in north London this summer, who are the youngsters ready to step up?

  • Tottenham are the only team in the Premier League to not sign a player
  • Meanwhile their rivals have splashed more than £850million so far this window
  • Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has hinted that the club will rely on their academy rather than signing players
  • Sportsmail takes a look at the players who could fill the gaps in Spurs' squad

With many of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals spending lavishly during this summer’s transfer window, the North London side’s lack of financial outlay has been conspicuous by its absence.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino is renowned for his cast-iron faith in young players, an approach echoed by longstanding chairman, Daniel Levy.

Levy has recently described the Premier League’s summer spending as ‘unsustainable’, stating that ‘we would rather give one of our academy players a chance’ than pay over-the-odds for an established star.

With this in mind, Sportsmail takes a look at six up-and-coming players aiming to cement themselves firmly in Tottenham’s first-team squad in the near future.

Kyle Walker-Peters (right-back, aged 20)

Walker-Peters - who bears no relation to former Spurs star Kyle Walker - won the under-20 World Cup with England this summer and started Spurs’ 4-2 win over PSG on Sunday.

The North Londoner’s blend of pace and positional awareness has not gone unnoticed by Kieran Trippier, either, who has described him as a ‘very good, hungry right-back’.

Marcus Edwards (playmaker/winger, aged 18)

Edwards’ style of play was famously likened to Lionel Messi’s by Mauricio Pochettino in September 2016, with his gossamer-woven dribbling and diminutive build certainly supporting the analogy.

Although Edwards is sitting out Spurs’ pre-season tour after starring for England under-19s this summer, increased first-team action seems likely with Spurs fans clamouring for his inclusion.

Kazaiah Sterling (centre-forward, aged 18)

Sterling’s goalscoring exploits last term with Spurs’ under-18s saw him catch Pochettino’s eye, and he promptly scored on his unofficial first-team debut, a friendly against Hong Kong side Kitchee in May.

From this season, the powerful striker will train alongside the first-team, with the Spurs boss stating that Sterling can have ‘no better teacher to learn from’ than Harry Kane.

Cameron Carter-Vickers (centre-back, aged 19)

The imposing defender was born and bred in England, but represents the USA at youth level.

Although he has been at fault for more than one goal on Tottenham’s pre-season tour, Pochettino has stated this summer that Carter-Vickers is ‘a player we believe can reach the level to play in the Premier League’.

Josh Onomah (midfielder/winger, aged 20)

Onomah made his first-team debut as long ago as January 2015, but struggled to push on.

However, his under-20 world Cup-winning performances this summer, full of neat dribbling and slick passing, very much caught the eye.

Onomah’s childhood idol, Moussa Dembele, is currently acting as a mentor to the youngster.

Tashan Oakley-Boothe (central midfielder, aged 17)

Given Oakley-Boothe’s age – he is Spurs’ first-ever player born in the year 2000, on Valentine’s Day – one would be forgiven for thinking his immediate first-team prospects are limited.

Yet judging by his ice-cool performance against PSG on Sunday night, he could well be winning the hearts of Spurs fans much sooner than expected.
