Barcelona 1-0 Manchester United LIVE: Neymar strikes after hectic start as Brazilian profits from Antonio Valencia error to condemn Red Devils to defeat

  • Manchester United have been beaten in their final game in the United States
  • Red Devils suffer defeat after Neymar scored the only goal of the game for Barca
  • Neymar profited after a mistake from United full back Antonio Valencia

Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Barcelona as they ended their tour of the United States in defeat.

Brazilian striker Neymar, linked heavily with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, scored the only goal of the game as he profited from an error by Antonio Valencia to slot the ball home.

Jose Mourinho's side now head to Norway, where they take on Valerenga, before a game with Sampdoria in Dublin.

That's a wrap

That's it from our live updates of tonight's game.

Thanks for following the contest with us.

JACK GAUGHAN: One of the intriguing plots to this pre-season for Manchester United centres on their defence. More specifically, the centre of their defence.

Who will partner Eric Bailly at the heart of Jose Mourinho’s back four? The answer is not quite as clear cut as we might have imagined when Victor Lindelof was paraded in June.

He might have cost £31million but the Iceman could yet be left in the cold during the opening weeks of this campaign. Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are effectively on trial.

FT: Barcelona 1-0 Manchester United

After four minutes of added time, including appeals for a penalty after a dubious handball from Denis Suarez, the referee calls a halt to the contest as United end their US Tour with defeat.

02:20
The fans have enjoyed it...
02:18
Just a reminder

If this game ends in a draw, we got straight to a penalty shootout.

Into the final five minutes now.

02:16
Get out of jail!

Fellaini's ball back to Romero is horribly short but Romero storms out superbly to clear under pressure from Alcacer.

Valencia is off, Tuanzebe on.

02:11
Bizarre

Roberto and Fellaini come together and the United man hits the deck after appearing to stub his own toe on the turf. United players aren't happy and surround the referee about it, which is just a bit odd.

02:07
Final 15 minutes

76 minutes: After a very long build up, Iniesta's free kick into the box is defender by Antonio Valencia.

02:05
Action shots
Aleix Vidal of Barcelona heads the ball
Sergi Roberto
02:04
And another!

United piling on the pressure now as Martial breaks out of midfield and scampers away down the left, only to cut inside and fire his low shot at the goalkeeper.

02:03
Same again...

This time it's Rashford who opens the door for United, but his shot is blocked by a Barca defender before the ball rolls out for Pereira to again fire over the top.

02:01

69 mins: A moment of excitement again as United create a chance, thanks to some industrious work from Martial... but Pereira drives the ball over the top of the bar.

01:58
Great save from Romero

It's Alcacer and he has to score, but United's Argentine goalkeeper gets out well and turns the ball behind. Bailly had been turned inside out in the lead up to that effort.

01:56
The closest United have come

65 minutes: A quick impact from Martial as he picks up on the ball following a sweeping United move from right to left, ending with the Frenchman curling the ball over the top of the bar.

01:54
Not what United want

Lingard is down getting treatment and that's his night over. It's not a particularly bad one, but no point in him continuing.

Martial replaces him, while Pereira is on for Mkhitaryan.

01:53
Better...

That's better from United as they win the ball back and break down field, with Rashford and Lukaku exchanging passes superbly, only for the Belgian to be crowded out.

01:51
We need a spark

60 mins: The raft of changes has really impacted this game. The fizz has gone, the chances have dried up and the crowd are not as engaged.

Very little in the way of goalmouth action at the start of the second period.

Surely there will be more changes soon, too.

01:50
Action shots
01:45

United's new backline of Valencia, Bailly, Jones and Darmian standing up well to Barcelona's second string.

01:41
Barcelona's team for the second period
01:39

Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are also on for United, replacing Lindelof and Smalling, as we get off and running in the second period.

01:37
Changes

Plenty from Barca as Pique and Iniesta lead the Catalans out for the second half and there's no sign of Neymar, Messi or Suarez. Arda Turan also one of the replacements, along with former Arsenal man Vermaelen.

For United, we've got Fellaini, Darmian and a change in goal as Romero replaces De Gea.

I'm sure there are some I've missed.

01:20
HT: Barcelona 1-0 Manchester United

And that's half-time, with Neymar's goal the difference.

It's been a very open half of football, with Mourinho a little worried by his side's defending, surely. They've been sliced open on numerous occasions.

01:17
Lukaku can't reach it!

Another good ball into the box is nearly perfect for Lukaku who had made space for himself, but Pogba's delivery is every so slightly ahead of his Belgian colleague and he's unable to make contact.

01:15

41 minutes: It's Suarez with the acrobatic effort which caught Smalling out, but De Gea palms it away.

01:15
Surely a yellow?

Blind hauls down Messi cynically and should really be booked, but in this friendly environment he gets away with one.

01:13
Another Messi effort

40 minutes: Messi takes aim from outside the box once again with a free-kick, and while it had De Gea worried, it was never going to have enough dip to test the Spaniard.

01:11
Neymar celebrates
Antonio Valencia was grounded ahead of Neymar's goal
01:08
USA! USA!

JACK GAUGHAN IN MARYLAND: We've not had a shot for three minutes so inevitable the Mexican waves begin...

01:05
GOAL 1-0 BARCA (Neymar 31)

It's a neat finish from Neymar but a howler from Antonio Valencia. The Ecuadorean defender looked to win the ball back inside his own area, but was weak and was pushed off the ball for the Brazilian to finish.

Oh dear. It had been coming.

01:04
Two football icons
Paul Pogba
Lionel Messi
01:03
Penalty box pinball

It all ends with Messi heading the ball over the top and wasting another chance, but the melee involved Rakitic and Semedo, all having a pop at goal.

01:01
Confident teen

JACK GAUGHAN: Marcus Rashford is exuding confidence here. Looks bright every time he picks up possession, not afraid to drive at his man and is proving a menace from the right and left. Delivery from wide areas is improving, too.

01:00
How is it still 0-0?

Suarez is the next to try and snake his way through the middle of the United backline, and he has some success before again shooting straight at De Gea.

United give the ball away again and Suarez tees up Messi, who shoots over the top.

We really should have some goals in this game.

00:59
Action shots
Victor Lindelof (L) of Manchester United gestures during as he tracks Neymar across the field
Michael Carrick superbly tackles Neymar
00:56

22 minutes: Messi wins a free kick, 30 yards out, after he is eased to the floor by Mkhitaryan, and the Argentine lines up an attempt at De Gea's goal. He's unable to test the Spaniard, though.

00:54
Pogba shows his drive

20 mins: Pogba drives 60 yards or so down the right touchline before winning a corner, as Busquets sticks out a leg to stop his marauding attack.

00:51
The hectic start continues

17 minutes: Rashford steals into the penalty area and takes on the shot from a tight angle, with Cillessen palming it away once again.

00:50
Action shot
Neymar of Barcelona controls the ball and looks to break
00:49
United's range rovers

15 minutes: Audacious effort from Pogba, but Cillessen is equal to it as the Dutch keeper springs to his left to palm it away. The danger isn't gone, and Mkhitaryan drives a low shot wide.

00:47
Bright start continues

13 minutes: Messi fires wide from outside the box after being given space to turn. You can't give a man who scored 54 goals last season that kind of space.

United turn defence into attack, with Lukaku testing the goalkeeper.

00:44
The biggest of tests

JACK GAUGHAN: Huge test this for Lindelof, who has not had the best of tours so far. His decision-making has been a little hesitant in the opening 10 minutes...

00:44

10 minutes: that's a great tackle from Michael Carrick as he slides in and wins the ball from Neymar, with the Brazilian looking to charge forward out of midfield and into attack.

00:41
Great save

Seven minutes: He's had a couple of testers in the opening minutes but that's a stunning save from De Gea, there. He got down well to turn a shot from Suarez behind for a corner.

00:40
Messi chance!

Six minutes: It's straight at De Gea again, this time from Messi, with the Argentine forcing he United keep to get down and keep the ball out. He should score, really. It came after a superb move involving Neymar and Suarez.

00:36

Three minutes: Barca are straight down the other end, with Neymar shooting straight at De Gea.

00:36
Chance!

Three minutes: It's the £75m man, Lukaku, who has the first chance of the game as Valencia delivers a superb ball, but the Belgian forward can only sky over the top of the bar.

The flag was up for offside, anyway.

00:34

One minute: Barcelona mount the first attack through Messi and Neymar, but Carrick gets back well to sniff out the danger.

00:33
United get us off and running

The Red Devils are wearing their new grey third shirt, with Barcelona wearing light blue.

Something doesn't feel quite right about that.

00:30

The teams are out and we're nearly ready to go, at the home of the Washington Redskins.

00:29
Our man in Maryland

JACK GAUGHAN: A fabulous stadium this one. Won't be a full house but a carnival atmosphere. Mourinho has gone with, by and large, his best side first half so we'll probably learn more in that 45.

00:22
Just 10 minutes until kick-off
00:03
Fans wait to get a glimpse of their heroes
23:36
The Barcelona side

This isn't too bad, either. The big three of Messi, Suarez and Neymar all start.

SUBS: Ortola, Jokin, Marlon, Piqué, Denis, Arda, Iniesta, Vermaelen, Alcácer, Digne, S.Roberto, A.Vidal, Samper, Douglas and Munir

23:35
Manchester United team

The teams are in and the line-up is a strong one for Manchester United. Their big guns all play, with Ander Herrera a notable absentee due to injury.

You could definitely argue this is a first choice side for Mourinho.

MANCHESTER UNITED: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Lindelof, Blind; Carrick, Pogba, Mkhitaryan; Rashford, Lingard, Lukaku.

SUBS: J Pereira, Romero, Bailly, Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Jones, Mitchell, Tuanzabe, Fellaini, McTominay, A Pereira, Martial
