Gylfi Sigurdsson saga will be resolved soon, says Paul Clement after Swansea midfielder asks to speak with Everton and misses Birmingham friendly

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson is understood to have sympathy with Everton over their pursuit
  • Swansea midfielder will sit out the friendly against Birmingham on Saturday
  • Club confirmed that the 'ongoing speculation' means they will be without him
  • Sigurdsson is keen to speak with Everton over a propsed move to Goodison Park

Gylfi Sigurdsson wants Swansea City to allow him the chance to speak to Everton over a proposed £45million transfer.

The Iceland international was left out of Swansea's 2-0 friendly win against Birmingham City on Saturday and is not in the frame of mind to play for the club while his future remains undecided.

Sportsmail understands Everton are plotting a fresh bid involving a £45m fee and a player swap for Sigurdsson.

The club said: 'Gylfi Sigurdsson, however, will not feature as it was agreed between the club and player that he would sit this game out due to the current transfer speculation surrounding him.'

Swansea boss Paul Clement has promised a swift resolution to the saga, and said after the Birmingham win: 'It was decided between me and the club, and him also, that it was the best decision for everybody involved that he wouldn't take part in games at this point.

'It's not something we want and we will not be allowing to drag on right until the deadline. It is not going to the end of the window, no way. This is something we are going to get sorted as soon as possible.

'I have no doubt that he'll be ready for us if necessary because I've seen him working hard day in, day out. He'll be back training with the first team on Monday when we rejoin.'

Swansea's owners have levelled accusations of bully tactics against Everton as they hold out for their £50m valuation though the 27-year-old Sigurdsson is understood to have sympathy with Everton who have conducted negotiations through the proper channels.

He has trained this week though refused to travel with his teammates to the USA earlier this month.

That prompted Swansea's owners, Steve Kaplan and Jason Levein to issue a statement saying: 'At this time we have not received an offer from any club which represents a fair valuation of Gylfi given his importance to our club.

'As we have stated, we will not be bullied or forced into a decision until a club meets our valuation of the player, no matter whether they believe they have an agreement with the player.

'Any such agreement would obviously be in contravention of Premier League legislation. We have the ultimate respect for Gylfi as a person and a player and we are optimistic that he will reconsider his decision and join his team-mates.'

Sigurdsson re-joined Swansea from Tottenham in a swap deal with Ben Davies worth £9million in 2014 and Everton have outlined an offer of £40million plus add-ons.

The Goodison Park club insisted last week that only one formal bid has been made while other figures mentioned have been informal proposals as they try to reach agreement on the fee.

Sigurdsson remains Ronald Koeman's prime target with Arsenal's Olivier Giroud still on the agenda also.
