And although it was Jordan Henderson's spot-kick down the middle that cost Liverpool a second pre-season trophy, you can be sure that the Reds will put this set-back behind them soon enough.

Jurgen Klopp's side battled well enough and will have learned a lot from playing against a very defensive minded team such as Atletico.

90min: A chance to win it for Robertson but from the edge of the box his low shot across goal just zips wide. That is most likely are final action of the game.

89min: And Atletico go close on the follow up too, only for Stefan Savic to turn his effort from inside the box over the crossbar.

88min: Fine stop from Danny Ward, who reacts well to tip over a near post header from Lucas Hernandez after a Nico Gaitan corner.

86min: For those of you dreading the thought of having to endure 30 more minutes, there will be no extra time so I assume this will go straight  to a penalty shootout.

83min: How much does the Audi Cup matter to Origi? A lot, as although the striker is tripped by Gabi inside the box his dive afterwards to go to ground is laughable.

Still a penalty kick is awarded and Roberto Firmino converts from the spot.

80min: There are signs that Liverpool are starting to stretch the Atletico defence, although that Simeone back four remains watertight.

Firmino floats a pass towards the back post but the ball is desperately headed clear before Kent can get a touch.

77min: Better from Liverpool. This time Origi receives the ball on the edge of the box before turning towards goal and drilling a powerful effort just wide of the near post.

75min: Half-chance for Liverpool and that may be as good as it gets for them as Grujic latches on to a Firmino knock down before drilling over the bar.

72min: Atletico Madrid make five changes as Nico Gaitan, Stefan Savic, Juanfran, Amath Ndiaye, Fernando Torres all come on as Thomas, Vietto, Vrsaljko, Correa and Kranevitter depart.

69min: Even in a friendly Atletico remain keen to defend for all their worth. There are at times eight yellow shirts camped inside the Spanish side's penalty box denying Liverpool space and opportunities to create an equaliser. It's going to take something special to break them down - especially playing a tempo as slow as this.

66min: Meanwhile Ragnar Klavan goes into the book following a late sliding challenge. Still no real chances in this half. Even by pre-season standards this has been a rather dreadful game.

63min: Good play from Andy Robertson, whose dangerous cross from the left is clumsily turned behind for a corner as Liverpool make two changes.

Dominic Solanke and Georginio Wijnaldum depart as Divock Origi and Ovie Ejaria come on.

60min: They are big changes too as Antoine Griezmann, Filipe Luis and Gabi come on for Sergi, Augusto Fernandez and Keidi Bare.

59min: Coming up to the hour mark and still not much has happened outside of that opening goal. Atletico Madrid are making changes though...

56min: Calm down, Sergi. It's only a friendly. The defender is very late with a sliding challenge on Ryan Kent, and the studs were up as he lunged in.

The full-back gives the Liverpool winger a pat on the head in apology as he picks up a booking.

53min: Liverpool look a little sharper with those changes, but Atletico Madrid have a few back up plans of their own.

The B-team is getting the job done right now but the likes of Antoine Griezmann are warming up for the Spanish club.

50min: Another alteration for Liverpool this half has seen Joe Gomez now moved to right-back following Flanagan's departure, with Joel Matip slotting into the centre of the back four.

The referee gets in the way of play with the ball appearing to strike him just above the groin. A lucky escape it has to be said.

47min: Good start from the Reds too as Henderson's chipped ball is nicely controlled by Dominic Solanke, whose first touch creates space and an angle to shoot at goal, with the ball turned wide.

Six in total as Marko Grujic, Ryan Kent, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson and Joel Matip come on for Ben Woodburn, James Milner, Sadio Mane, Emre Can, Jon Flanagan and Adam Lallana.

This time yesterday Liverpool were purring against Bayern Munich, but this evening is a very different story.

Two games in two days look a step too far for the likes of Sadio Mane and Emre Can, but the Reds' biggest problem is breaking down an Atletico side that look far more organised than Bayern Munich did yesterday.

Just one chance in the whole half from both teams, but it did result in the goal and a moment to forget for Ragnar Klavan who was far too slow to react the rebound that resulted in Danny Ward's superb save to push Angel Correa's shot onto the crossbar.

42min: Coming up to the break and Liverpool continue to look rather lost in a game where neither side has forced much of an attacking issue.

39min: Liverpool have lost their way a bit since conceding, with Atletico noticeably seeing more of the ball before the break. Not many stars for the Reds to call upon tonight as the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah have been given the night off.

36min: Mane looks more like a player who will get sent off than one that can get Liverpool back into this game right now, as he rather recklessly slides in on Matías Kranevitter while already on a booking.

33min: Completely against the run of play but Atletico have the lead! A ball is sprayed wide for Sime Vrsaljko, whose cross is diverted towards goal by Correa, only for Danny Ward to make a stunning stop to turn the ball onto the crossbar.

The Liverpool players are slow to the rebound though and it allows Keidi Bare to head home the rebound.

32min: Liverpool are just about edging this overall at this stage with Atletico struggling to get out their half.

Sadio Mane gets in a dangerous cross that Gimenez clears.

29min: Not even half-an-hour gone and the crowd are bored already as the Mexican Wave starts going around the ground. Not surprised really, I still can't recall a shot on target.

26min: And now James Milner is booked after preventing An Atletico player from counterattacking by grabbing his arm.

23min: He's getting frustrated too following a tangle for the ball with Lucas Hernandez, reacting to a few words from the Atletico defender by lightly lifting his arm to his opponent's jaw.

In a major game it's arguably a red card offence, for now though yellow is a sensible punishment from the referee.

20min: Mane started on the left yesterday, this evening he is on the right but he is getting nowhere near the freedom of the pitch that Bayern offered him.

17min: Seeing Atletico Madrid do some defending isn't an uncommon sight under Diego Simeone but they don't look particularly comfortable at this stage.

Liverpool's passing is improving and they are getting more confident as they switch the play. I must say a shot on target would be nice though if asking for a goal is too much.

14min: Half-chance for Liverpool. Adam Lallana curls a cross to the back post where with a side volley Woodburn fires well wide across goal.

Not an easy chance, but the 17-year-old continues to look a threat for the Reds.

11min: Thumbs up from Dominic Solanke and it's easy to understand why as he glances a header just wide across goal after a magnificent cross from Ben Woodburn on the left. Good play from the Liverpool youngsters.

9min: Atletico Madrid are starting to see more of the ball now and only a decent interception from Joe Gomez prevents a through ball from reaching the penalty box.

6min: Liverpool's passing is not perhaps as crisp and unlike Bayern, it appears Atletico are more wary to the Reds counter attack and the pace of Sadio Mane.

Still no chances.

3min: A similar pattern to yesterday's semi-final so far. Not much in the way of chances but Liverpool perhaps look the more settled team so far.

The weather has improved from yesterday, not a surprise given Munich was lashed with a thunderstorm on Tuesday.

Like the semi-final giant replica shirts of both teams surround the Audi Cup banner in the centre of the pitch.

Seems a bit much for a pre-season friendly, how long before these type of tournaments get their own opening ceremony?

Lots of changes for both sides. Only Emre Can and Sadio Mane survive from the team that started the 3-0 win over Bayern, while Atletico have made 11 alterations.

DOMINIC KING: Sadio Mane provided a thrilling reminder of what Liverpool missed last season as he led Liverpool into the final of the Audi Cup.

Though Liverpool ultimately clambered into the top four, Mane’s absence through injury was keenly felt in the closing weeks but, on the evidence he provided against a startled Bayern Munich, he has returned better than ever.

There was a sting in the tail for Jurgen Klopp, however, who saw Daniel Sturridge sustain what appeared to be a thigh injury as he scored the final goal in a comprehensive 3-0 dismantling of their distinguished hosts.

And that caps a miserable tournament for hosts Bayern Munich who having been comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Liverpool yesterday have lost again this evening.

The third-place play-off at the Allianz Arena saw Napoli run out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Kalidou Koulibaly and Emanuele Giaccherini. 

Moya, Vrsaljko, Giménez, Lucas, Sergi, Kranevitter, Augusto, Thomas, Keidi, Correa and Vietto.

Barcelona will step up their chase for Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho by making a new bid of €120million – over £100m – with the departure of Neymar moving ever closer.

PSG are closing in on a world-record £196m move for Neymar, who left Barcelona's training ground just 43 minutes after arriving on Wednesday morning.

And the Spanish giants want to make his fellow Brazilian Coutinho their big-name capture of the summer.
