Manchester United new boy Nemanja Matic gets used to his surroundings as he shops with wife Aleksandra Pavic

Nemanja Matic wandered around a rainy Manchester city centre on Friday as he and wife Aleksandra Pavic got familiar with their new surroundings following their move northwards.

The Serbian star completed a £40million move to Manchester United last week and has been training with Jose Mourinho's men ahead of their season-opening game against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

But despite his race to get fit for the UEFA Super Cup tie, Matic found time to unwind with a spot of shopping and didn't let the weather stop him from visiting the famous Selfridge's department store.

Funnily enough, it is a shop that Matic and his wife of seven years would have been well acquainted with as the only other branch is located in the heart of London, where he spent five years with Chelsea across two spells.

Regardless, they proudly sported the famous yellow bags as they wandered around the streets before Matic appeared to grow tired of the hustle and bustle and chose to wait outside Harvey Nichols.

He certainly would have had plenty of cash to splash having agreed a three-year deal worth a hefty £140,000 a week at Old Trafford. But he will have to prove he is worth it by bringing the title-winning form he produced for Antonio Conte last season.

Speaking of his new signing, Mourinho said: 'Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player. He represents everything we want in a footballer; loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player.

'I would like to thank him for his desire to join us because without that, it would be impossible to have him here. I am sure our players and supporters will love him. A big welcome to our new No 31.'

He can thank Mourinho for those kind words by helping them win the Super Cup, but must first prove his fitness after only training in solitude with Chelsea prior to his transfer.

On playing in Macedonia next week: 'I will try to be 100 per cent ready. I will try hard. I hope that I will be an option for those games, but we will see.

'We still have six days (now four) but I'm sure that everybody is ready and I will try to be 100 per cent ready, and I hope that we can do something for this club.'
