Jose Mourinho never grasped the way things worked at Real Madrid, says Sergio Ramos ahead of Super Cup final showdown with Manchester United

  • Jose Mourinho never grasped the nuances of Real Madrid, says Sergio Ramos
  • The Portuguese won one La Liga and one Copa Del Rey during his time in Spain
  • Madrid have since gone on to clinch three Champions League titles

Sergio Ramos has suggested Jose Mourinho never truly grasped the nuances of Real Madrid's dressing room during his three-year spell in charge.

Mourinho left the Bernabeu in 2013 having won one La Liga and Copa Del Rey but suggested earlier on Monday that his real achievement was lifting Real out of the doldrums.

Real have since gone on to clinch three Champions League titles, two of them under Zinedine Zidane, and Ramos believes the current manager - a former player - is a perfect fit ahead of Tuesday's Super Cup final in Skopje.

'My view is that when a team has a new coach it changes a great deal,' Ramos said. 'How to manage the dressing room... Zidane is good at understanding our dressing room. Mourinho had a lot of experience.

'They are both great coaches and we're grateful to live this historical moment with Zidane.'

Zidane himself straight batted questions on Gareth Bale's future after Mourinho made it clear United would bid for the Welshman were they to be given encouragement.

And Ramos confirmed he was close to making a switch to Old Trafford in 2015 before signing a new five-year contract.

'There was an opportunity in the past,' he added. 'It resolved itself in a different way. I'm grateful to United for the interest. It's a great club and I wish them all the best.'
