Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku cost £165million... but can't score from six yards out! Manchester United duo mocked for Super Cup misses

Manchester United have made waves in the transfer market in recent years, splashing millions of pounds to get them back to the top in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

They broke the transfer record to land Paul Pogba from Juventus for £89million last year - a record that has since been shattered by Neymar's switch to PSG - and spent £75million to lure Romelu Lukaku from Everton a few weeks ago.

Boss Jose Mourinho will be hopeful that the big-money signings will deliver them plenty of trophies... except they missed the chance to do that last night.

Manchester United were 2-0 down in the second half at the National Arena Philip II in Skopje, thanks to goals from Casemiro and Isco.

The Premier League side were outplayed in the first half but were handed the opportunity to get back into the game.

With just under an hour gone, Pogba ghosted between two players and had a free header at Keylor Navas from around six yards out.

Sadly the Frenchman's effort was tame and his attempt on goal was easily beaten away from the Costa Rican - but only as far as the onrushing Lukaku.

The 24-year-old's eyes lit up as he bore down on goal... but he skied his shot horribly - much to the chagrin of football fans watching around the world.

Marcus Rashford later missed another golden chance and while Lukaku got on the scoresheet later on, it was too little too late as Madrid secured back to back Super Cups, becoming the first side to do so since 1990.

Having suffered defeat in Macedonia, Mourinho is now switching his attention to his side's season opener against West Ham on Sunday.

'We deserve a rest tomorrow,' Mourinho told BT Sport. 'We'll go for it [against West Ham] with everything.

'I'm so happy to be the manager of these guys, I've never had a group I like so much during my long career. I'm going to fight for them.'
