Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino insists he will 'of course' sign players... but 'maybe on the last day' as he reveals he has forgiven Danny Rose

Mauricio Pochettino has promised to make signings before the market closes at the end of August after Danny Rose criticised Tottenham's transfer policy.

Rose, wanted by Manchester United and Chelsea, called for Spurs to make signings he 'didn't have to Google' in order to build on the promise of last season.

Pochettino said: 'If you see the last five years, Tottenham always spend money and sign players at the end of the transfer window. I don't understand why it's a big issue now.

'We will add players who can strengthen the squad. We will work hard until the end to add more possibilities to have in the future. With the players we have we can compete in a very good way.

'Of course, we will sign, like every season, maybe on the last day. We will sign players we believe can help us to challenge for the things we want to challenge for.'

Pochettino said he had not spoken to Rose personally and was happy to 'forgive' the England international for breaking ranks to speak out in an interview with the Sun.

Rose, still 'some weeks' from a return to action after a knee injury, has been fined two weeks' wages and released an apology via his representatives Base moments before the Spurs manager was due to give his pre-match press conference.

Pochettino said: 'He apologised to the club, to the chairman, to me and to the fans, which is so important. It is good.

'I was a player and sometimes after seven months not playing you are frustrated for different reasons.

'He signed last year a five-year contract. He's our player. He needs to be focused and try to be fit as soon as possible. Since January he has been working hard trying to fix his problem.

'We are helping him to provide the tools to be ready again and see after if he can help the team to achieve our targets next season.

'It was his opinion and then he understood he needed to apologise. I forgive that. For me, let's move on and try to get him fit as soon as possible.

'It's difficult for me to judge every opinion. Fans, media, us, him we all have opinions. I respect all opinions but when [chairman] Daniel Levy made an offer to me to come here, no one forced me to sign it.

'It's like that for the player. No-one forces him to sign a contract. We are here in Tottenham, no-one forced him to sign and stay here. We are here because we want to be here.

'Tottenham is an exciting club with a great vision and a great future, one of the best facilities in the world and I enjoy it a lot. We are well paid by the club. I am more than happy to be here.'

As for unwanted disruption on the eve of the new season, Pochettino said: 'It is more outside than inside the club. The players were very calm. Sometimes you can understand the frustration.

'For me it's not a big issue, it is time to move on. It's good for him to say that. It's time to start a new season, it's an exciting time. We are so calm. The team is ready to compete.

'We are so competitive and so ambitious. It's a big challenge for us to make Tottenham a winning team and build a strong mentality to challenge the big sides like Manchester United and City who are spending a lot of money.

'When you see our philosophy and the way we work it's so exciting. Why not try to win in a different way to the other clubs? It is to be unique and try to be as strong and not have doubts when others have doubts and are nervous.

'We are calm and relaxed. We will see at the end of the season if we are right or wrong.'
