Tottenham are preparing to splash £35m on Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez... but the Dutch club are demanding more before they cash in

  • Tottenham are planning to bid £35million for young defender Davinson Sanchez
  • Sanchez played a key role in Ajax's journey to the Europa League final last season
  • The Colombian has attracted interest from European clubs, including Barcelona
  • Ajax have offered him a new £54,000 a week contract to persuade him to stay

Tottenham are preparing to launch a £35million bid for Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.

The 21-year-old Colombian was an outstanding performer for the Dutch club last season and has attracted interest across Europe with Inter Milan and Barcelona both monitoring the player.

Mauricio Pochettino and his scouting staff have identified 6ft 2ins Sanchez as a prime target as he can fit into their system either operating at centre back or as a defensive midfielder.

Ajax are keen to hold on to him and have offered a new contract worth £54,000 a week

But Ajax are keen to hold on to him and have offered a new contract worth £54,000 a week

But Ajax have offered Sanchez a huge new deal worth £54,000 a week to stave off Tottenham's interest in the Colombian centre half.

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars is quoted in respected Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf saying: 'We have made a top offer to Davinson for a new contract.'

It is understood that the 21-year-old Tottenham target will now double his wages at Ajax to €60,000 a week – around £54,000 a week – which is comparable to what Spurs pay their defenders.

And Ajax, who previously have said they would not sell for less than £35m, have now reassessed that figure in the inflationary wake of Neymar's £198m deal and left back Benjamin Mendy's £51.75m move to Manchester City.

The Dutch club plan to keep him for one more year and expect to receive more than £60m for him next summer, with Barcelona among the clubs lurking.

The determination of Ajax to keep Sanchez for one more season is a blow to Spurs and certainly they would have to bid well over £40m and consider wages of around £75,000 a week – which would put Sanchez among their top earners and only increase the discontent expressed by Danny Rose at the club's relatively low wages among the rest of the team.

Tottenham have also bid for 20-year-old Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop and want Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga as their summer recruitment finally begins to take shape.

Southampton are among the clubs who have an interest in Tottenham centre back Kevin Wimmer.
