Manchester United 4-0 West Ham, Premier League RESULT: Romelu Lukaku bags a brace as Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial also net

Can he play you every week? Let’s face it, if Romelu Lukaku could, Manchester United would be absolute certainties to win the league.

In his last 11 games against West Ham, this is the 10th match in which he has scored. A goalless draw with Everton at the Olympic Stadium on April 22 this year marking the only time he has failed.

On this occasion, his Premier League debut for Manchester United, get got two. Nothing like taking the pressure off, and if ever a team is designed to relieve tension for Lukaku, it is West Ham.

FULL TIME: Manchester United 4-0 West Ham

What a start to the season for Jose Mourinho's side.

Their biggest win, home or away, since September 2014.

They are top of the league. Romelu Lukaku scores twice, Pogba gets on the scoresheet.

David de Gea keeps a clean sheet.

What more could they have wanted?

For West Ham, it's a tough start. They prop up the table and, Hernandez aside, didn't produce a great deal to encourage their supporters.

17:46
90min: GOAL! (United, Pogba)

This is turning ugly for West Ham.

But for Manchester United, it's the perfect start to the season.

After more fine build up play, Pobga is played into space on the edge of the box. The Frenchman makes no mistake, curling past Hart and into the net from 20 yards.

United are top of the table as it stands!

17:44
87min: GOAL! (United, Martial)

This is a brilliant goal.

Pogba slides the ball into Mkhitaryan on the edge of the box and the Armenia international plays a delightful first-time ball to Martial who is between Zabaleta and Reid.

His first touch is perfect and allows him to open up his body and fire past Hart.

That turns out to be Mkhitaryan's final contribution as he is replaced by Jesse Lingard.

17:42

86min: Lukaku almost turns provider as he dinks a nice ball into his team-mate and good friend Pogba.

The Frenchman's effort is blocked however, as West Ham keep it down to two.

17:40
It's been one of those days...
17:38
81min: Cresswell replaces Masuaku

Aaron Cresswell is returning to full fitness and he is given a run out in place of left back Arthur Masuaku, who has actually been one of the visitors' brighter sparks going forward.

17:36
80min: Rashford comes off for Martial

The end of a fine display for Marcus Rashford, who is replaced to a huge ovation.

'Tony Marshall' is on in his place, a prospect which I'm sure delights the aging Zabaleta.

17:35
78min: Arnautovic wastes a good chance!

Oh Arny!

Declan Rice spreads the ball to the left and the ball is crossed into the United box. No one deals with it and it comes through to Arnautovic in acres of space.

He has time to bring it down and - with three team-mates waiting in the middle - fires a wild effort well over.

17:33
75min: Fellaini replaces Mata

Jose Mourinho is in consolidation mode here.

He knows West Ham will look to launch a late raid on their goal so he has brought on some additional height and physicality into midfield.

It's now a 4-3-3 for United, with Fellaini and Pogba flanking Matic. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has come out to the right hand side.

17:31

74min: More fine work from Rashford who profits from Zabaleta being drawn out of position to run clear again.

He leaves Winston Reid in his wake and wins a corner. He has been electric today.

17:28
71min: Almost three!

Daley Blind almost puts the game to bed with a delightful volley.

The Dutchman is picked out at the back post and he lets the ball drop onto his left foot.

He smashes it into the ground and towards goal. Hart dives desperately but the ball flies just over the bar.

17:27

70min: Breathless stuff at Old Trafford here.

United are swarming all over West Ham, everyone wants to get in on the act.

First Rashford and now Pogba. The midfielder is enjoying himself and getting himself further and further forward. But he can't make the most of some promising positions and West Ham remain only a couple down.

17:24
A penny for their thoughts...
17:23
66min: Rashford hits the post!

Almost a superb goal from Rashford!

The England international is causing Zabaleta all sorts of problems here.

The defender, on a yellow card, is reluctant to get too close to him and Rashford is allowed to cut inside and shoot from the left corner of the box. The ball flies past Hart but comes back off the far post.

Meanwhile, Angelo Ogbonna goes into the book for a bad tackle on Mkhitaryan.

17:21
63min: Chance United!

The game is opening up here and Joe Hart is called into action again as Henrikh Mkhitaryan finishes a fine run with a low shot from the edge of the box.

You feel there is sure to be more goals here. But which way will it/they go?

17:18
60min: Double change from West Ham

Slaven Bilic rolls the dice.

Midfielder Edmilson Fernandes comes off for another forward in the shape of Diafra Sakho.

Mark Noble also makes way for Declan Rice.

Sakho, who scored here last year, nearly makes an immediate impact but he fails to make the most of a free header. United break quickly and Lukaku is denied a hat-trick by a fine block from Pablo Zabaleta!

Substitute Declan Rice battles with Paul Pogba for possession
17:16
58min: Arnautovic hits the post!

Now it's United's turn to breathe a sigh of relief as Arnautovic hits the post for West Ham.

The Austrian gets the wrong side of Daley Blind and rises above the United defender, heading a cross towards David de Gea's goal.

The keeper scrambles backwards as the ball hits the bar and goes over.

17:14
56min: Goal... no ruled out!

United have the ball in the net again but it's ruled out for offside.

Again it's Matic who sets it off, by winning the ball high up the pitch.

He feeds Rashford, who exchanges passes with Mata in the box before sliding it across for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to score.

But the England international had strayed offside in the build-up. Let off for the Hammers.

17:09
52min: GOAL! Lukaku nets his second!

What a start to life at Old Trafford for Romelu Lukaku.

If Paul Pogba struggled in his early days at United, Lukaku is hitting the ground running.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan floats in a delightful free kick and the No 9 rises unchallenged to glance a header into the bottom corner.

It was a good header but it's poor defensively from the visitors, who left the dangerman virtually unmarked. It's these kind of games that United were drawing last season and the kind supporters hoped Lukaku would dominate. So far, so good.

17:08
51min: Yellow card for Zabaleta

That's the foul of a veteran.

United again look to hit West Ham on the break and again Rashford is set free down the left.

He runs at Zabaleta, who is happy to take the foul outside the box, rather than let the young forward run at goal.

17:07

48min: It's been a quiet start to the second period as West Ham try to build some momentum and launch a come back.

When it comes, the first chance falls to United as Marcus Rashford is set free in the inside-left channel. His first touch is good and he attempts to open up his body and curl it into the far corner.

But his finish is wayward and West Ham remain only a goal down.

17:03
We're back underway

The second half is underway and West Ham have an immediate opportunity to level things up but Arnautovic's free-kick is dealt with.

No changes from either side.

17:00
From one No 9 to another...
16:47
HALF TIME!

United head into the break in front.

But only just. Moments before the half-time whistle, Ayew finds Noble in the box who lays it off for Fernandes. The midfielder shoots hard but straight at De Gea from the edge of the box.

It's a let off for United, who have grown into this game. Matic has been immense.

With the big price tag on his back, it's also been the perfect start for Lukaku, while the likes of Pogba and Rashford have shown in fits and bursts why United fans head into this season optimistic.

West Ham have done well in patches but they've been pegged back in their half for too long, preventing them from building any concerted pressure.

16:44

44min: Both managers would probably take the half-time whistle right now.

West Ham can't afford to let United double their lead, while United need to consolidate their lead, something they so often failed to do last year.

16:41
STAT BOMB

Here's one to encourage you Hammers fans...

Jose Mourinho has NEVER lost a home league game on a Sunday.

16:41

40min: That goal seems to have put some fire in the visitors' belly.

They're giving this a good go now.

They have yet to trouble De Gea but Arnautovic puts in a brilliant excellent cross that looks threatening but is well dealt with.

16:37

37min: West Ham look for an immediate response through Mark Noble.

The central midfielder fires a speculative effort from distance that is well-struck but flies over De Gea's bar.

United force a corner at the other end and Valencia's effort is blocked.

16:33
33min: GOAL! Man United (Lukaku)

That's football.

West Ham were enjoying their best spell for some time but one mistake and their behind.

Obiang is caught in midfield by Matic and United break. Rashford runs at the West Ham back four before sliding in Lukaku who fires left foot past Hart and into the net, via the post.

Lift off for Lukaku!

16:30

30min: Some respite for the Hammers following some sustained United pressure.

Arthur Masuaku runs down the left and is brought down by Pogba. Arnautovic wastes the free-kick, however, as he fails to beat the first man.

16:28
27min: CHANCE UNITED!

Juan Mata again!

Again the Spain international makes a clever run in behind on the left-hand channel. He is found by a delightful reverse ball from Pogba.

Mata squares the ball towards Lukaku, with the goal gaping. But Ogbonna does well to intervene.

From the resulting couple of corners, Hart comes flying off his line to beat Lukaku to the ball and clear the danger.

16:26
26min: Matic starts brightly

It's been an encouraging start from Nemanja Matic. The Serbian is controlling United's midfield and seeing a lot of the ball.

Further forward Rashford turns one way then the other but is forced to settle for a corner.

16:24

24min: Arnautovic hits the post but he is flagged offside.

Having come off his wing, the Austria international latched onto a loose ball in behind but he had gone a little too early and it wouldn't have counted had he beaten De Gea.

16:22
STAT ALERT

Romelu Lukaku has a better record against West Ham than any other Premier League side.

The Belgium international has scored nine goals in 12 appearances against the Hammers.

He nearly improved that record here.

16:21

20min: It's West Ham's turn to attack now.

Mark Noble dinks a cheeky ball in behind to Hernandez, who had peeled off the back of the United defence.

His scuffed cross is in towards Ayew but United clear.

16:20
18min: Chance Lukaku!

Oh Romelu!

Joe Hart is called into action for the first time as a smart run from Mata sees him in behind the West Ham defence.

The angle is tight and Hart does well to block the shot. The ball falls to Mata again however and he slides the ball across goal towards Lukaku who has the goal gaping. But the striker, who is under pressure from West Ham bodies, could not turn it goalwards and the visitors escape.

Lukaku wants a penalty but nothing doing.

16:16

15min: Likewise, I doubt Mark Arnautovic dreamed of making tackles near his own byline when he signed for West Ham.

But that's what he's had to do here as his side struggle to get a foothold.

United have yet to create a meaningful chance. West Ham have struggled to touch the ball.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan fires a shot at goal
16:14

13min: Javier Hernandez won't enjoy his Old Trafford return if it carries on in this vein.

The Mexican is isolated and rarely getting out of his own half. United are pinning West Ham back. Chicharito is chasing shadows.

16:12
Meanwhile...away from Old Trafford
16:11

11min: United enjoying a good spell of possession here but they have yet to create a clear chance. Lukaku does well to rise about Lukaku and nod the ball down into a dangerous area but no one in a United shirt was following in to take advantage.

16:09

'City reject' is the home fan's lovely greeting to Joe Hart as he protects the goal at the Stretford End.

16:08

7min: Good game this.

Zabaleta makes a good run into United territory but he can't find a team-mate and the hosts look to break.

Romelu Lukaku brings it forward down the left and earns a corner. Eric Bailly flicks it into a dangerous area but no one is on the end of it.

16:05

4min: Not very clever that from Antonio Valencia.

The United captain fouls Arnautovic and while he complains to the referee, West Ham take the free-kick quickly and set the Hammers' record-signing free down the left. He has Chicharito in the box but instead picks out Fernandes on the edge of the box. His shot is blocked, however.

16:03

2min: United look to start quickly but West Ham have enjoyed a good share of the ball in the opening couple of minutes.

As the clock passes two minutes Hernandez if flagged offside. He's back!

16:00
