Dele Alli reveals how he kept his cool after Jonjo Shelvey stamped on him as the Tottenham midfielder had the last laugh against Newcastle

Dele Alli has admitted how he tried to keep his cool and not react aggressively despite Newcastle's players attempting to wind him up on Sunday.

Jonjo Shelvey was shown a red card by referee Andre Marriner when he stamped on the ankle of Alli during Tottenham's 2-0 away win.

The England international, who has retaliated before when provoked, said it was crucial he kept his own temper in check.

Shelvey caught the England international's right ankle with his left boot in the second half 

Alli appeared in pain immediately after Shelvey had made contact with the Spurs player 

'I've had a few talks with the gaffer and some people. I've been called out a couple of times for my temper but it's something I like to keep in my game,' he said.

'It was a game today where we had to keep our cool. We didn't want to get too heated up and get brought into what they wanted us to do, which was to make it more of a physical battle than a game of football.

'I don't think there was any need to react today.'

Alli, who went on to score Tottenham's opener before Ben Davies added a second for Mauricio Pochettino's men, also admitted he didn't hold anything against Shelvey for what happned. 

He said: 'I think some of those things happen sometimes in football. It's one of those things, but he's a great player and I'm sure he's going to be disappointed.

'It was important that we stayed professional and kept doing what we knew we had to do, which was keep the ball moving, even though it was difficult at times.

'But yeah, I don't want to talk about it (the Shelvey stamp) too much to be honest, but I think it was a good performance by everyone today.'
