Romelu Lukaku 'could, should and probably will' score between 25 and 30 Premier League goals for Manchester United this season, according to the division's all-time top scorer Alan Shearer.

The Belgian star put on a show at Old Trafford on Sunday as he bagged a brace during a 4-0 rout of West Ham in what was his first Premier League performance since a £75million move from Everton.

And the former Newcastle striker believes it was a sign of things to come, predicting Lukaku will be chasing the Premier League Golden Boot by scoring as many as 30 goals in his debut campaign with United.

Not only that, but Shearer also claimed that Lukaku may turn out to be an upgrade on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who became something of a cult figure during a solitary season with the club last term.

Shearer told Match of the Day 2: 'It was a complete centre-forward performance. He was aggressive, he had pace, he gave his team-mates options and his touch was excellent.

'More important when you look at a centre forward, he has to deliver goals and he did that today. He was just superb and horrible to play against.

'What they had last year with Ibrahimovic was a very good player but someone who was coming towards the end of his career. What they have got now in Lukaku is a guy who is 24-years of age, who's into his prime, who's been around the Premier League for five years.

'Now I think he could go onto the next level. He will get more chances playing in a better team. He could, should and probably will get between 25 and 30 league goals this season.'

The 4-0 win was Jose Mourinho's biggest as Manchester United manager and placed them as early favourites to win the Premier League title. For Shearer, it was by far the best display from the Red Devils since the Portuguese took over last summer.

He continued: 'I would say it was the best performance under Mourinho. It had pace, it had energy, it had an edge to it and they dominated in every position from start to finish. It had everything and it was enjoyable to watch.'
