Mats Hummels joins Juan Mata in donating 1% of salary to charity as Bayern Munich star signs up to Spaniard's Common Goal initiative

Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has signed up to help Juan Mata in his Common Goal and will donate one percent of his salary to charity.

With transfer fees and wages escalating, Manchester United midfielder Mata launched the charity earlier this month telling Sportsmail how he wanted a team of players to follow his example with the ultimate aim to get football's clubs and institutions to donate one percent as well.

Germany international Hummels was switched on to the idea after reading Mata's interview.

'As soon as I heard of Common Goal I knew this was a chance for football to improve our world and I wanted to be part of it,' said 28-year-old Hummels.

'I feel we could be doing more to connect the increasing revenues in football to some kind of deeper purpose.

This is what struck me about Common Goal. Through the one percent pledge, we are building a bridge between football and social impact around the world.'

Mata called World Cup winner Hummels 'the perfect teammate'.

'I don't actually know Mats personally, so I was pleasantly surprised when he contacted me to talk,' says Mata. 'He really gets what we are trying to achieve and is the perfect teammate to have on board at this early stage.

The fact that a World Cup winner, at the peak of his career with one of the biggest clubs on the planet, has chosen to make the pledge shows the power and magic of what we are doing.

'The reception to Common Goal so far has been amazing and I have no doubt Mats' involvement will inspire more players to join.'

Hummels, like Mata, challenged his peers to follow suit and help.

'I'm putting the call out to all my fellow footballers: join Juan and me and help to take the game to the next level.'

The players' donations will be pooled into a fund steered by Berlin-based NGO streetfootballworld and goes to helping underprivileged areas around the globe..
