Tottenham Hotspur have finally made their first signing of the transfer window after confirming the £42million capture of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax.

Subject to a medical and a work permit, the Colombian international has penned a six-year deal at the club.

The transfer comes following a summer of tough negotiations, which ended when Ajax accepted a deal worth a total of £42million - made up of a £28m up-front payment and the remainder in add-ons for success.

The 21-year-old has stated he is looking forward to his new challenge as his arrival bolsters Mauricio Pochettino's centre-back options.

'I would like to thank the coach, management, players and fans of Ajax. It is a great move for me to come here to develop my career, Sanchez told Tottenham's website.

'I am very excited to be signing for such a famous club as Tottenham Hotspur. I am looking forward to working with Mauricio Pochettino and the players and meeting everyone there.'

Having already sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City in this transfer window, Pochettino had claimed he wanted to make four signings before the deadline at the end of the month.

Sanchez's arrival is the first for Spurs this summer, who were the last Premier League club to open up the chequebook in the transfer market.

Pape Cheikh Diop of Celta Vigo, Paulo Gazzaniga of Southampton and Ross Barkley of Everton are also targets but the Spurs boss admitted finalising deals has been tough this summer.

'I want four players if possible but it is not easy,' said Pochettino.

'We need time to work,' he added. 'We always sign three or four, every season. It's important to try to assess the players who have possibility to come.

'We are a very strong group, and we create good habits and philosophy. It's not easy for us to sign the right profile.

'But easy for players to come to Tottenham, because good people will come. Most important thing is trying to be right in the players we sign for the future of the club.'

Sanchez's arrival is set to spell the end of Kevin Wimmer's career at Spurs, with West Bromwich Albion favourites to land the Austrian international.

Work permit red tape means Sanchez cannot make his debut in Sunday's clash with London rivals Chelsea, but he is expected to be presented to the Wembley crowd.

The deal smashes Spurs’ previous transfer record, the £30m paid to Newcastle for France midfielder Moussa Sissoko last summer.
