Marcos Alonso has paid tribute to his team-mates and the togetherness of the Chelsea squad following their hard-fought victory over London rivals Tottenham.

The Spaniard was the unlikely hero as Chelsea battled hard to put their title rivals from last season to the sword, in what was Spurs' first home game at Wembley.

Alonso opened the scoring with a sublime free-kick in the first half, before later going on to grab the winner in the dying moments with the tie finely poised at 1-1.

The victory not only provided a morale boost for the Blues, after getting one over on their potential rivals for the Premier League crown, but was also much needed following a poor opening day of the season.

Beating Spurs in their own back yard enabled Chelsea to shut away the demons of their recent humiliating home defeat by Burnley.

Man of the moment Alonso recognised the importance of the win and later admitted his side know how to suffer to get the three points.

'We needed a win after a bad start last week,' Alonson told Chelseafc.com

'We knew it was going to be a tough game but we knew how to suffer as well and we stuck together throughout the whole game and we got the reward in the end.

'I was not expecting Pedro's ball to be honest but as soon as I saw it coming, I knew I was going to try to shoot, and I was a bit lucky when it went underneath the goalkeeper to make it 2-1,' he added.

Chelsea are set to return to Premier League action on Sunday when they come up against Everton.

Antonio Conte's side will host the Toffees at Stamford Bridge on the final weekend before the summer transfer window slams shut.
