Crystal Palace's hopes of landing Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho this summer appear over after they were told they would need to stump up £30million for the Frenchman.

Eagles manager Frank de Boer is hoping to bring in defensive reinforcements before the end of the summer transfer window following two defeats in his opening two Premier League games.

But the Dutch boss will have to turn his attentions elsewhere after Liverpool slapped a hefty price tag on their out-of-favour centre-back, who spent the second half of last season at Selhurst Park.

Ahead of Palace's Carabao Cup second-round tie at home to Ipswich Town, De Boer said:  'Everybody knows [Sakho] had a major impact last season and, when he's available for us [to buy], I think that is a quality injection for the club.

'It is not like this now because he is much too expensive for the club.'  

Sakho was nominated for Palace's player of the season despite making just eight Premier League appearances since his move south in January, but the 27-year-old made a huge impression under former manager Sam Allardyce.

The former Paris Saint-Germain defender is angling for a move to another Premier League club having been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, but the Reds will only accept bids that reflect the current market.

Palace chairman Steve Parish admits he has been stunned by the figures he has seen other clubs spend this summer.

'What's returned to football are the big-money owners, the win‑at‑all‑costs owners, almost bottomless pockets,' he said.

'I'd love to see how it all fits with Financial Fair Play, by the way, because I just can't see how half of this fits with that because the revenue of the clubs hasn't grown this year.

'I'm not accusing people of anything. I just don't understand the numbers - for some of the clubs - that they're spending, that are being quoted and how you can make that fit over a period with Financial Fair Play.' 

Sakho was bought by Liverpool for £18m in September 2013, and the athletic centre half has gone on to make 56 Premier League appearances on Merseyside, scoring twice.

Having been omitted from the France squad at Euro 2016 due to an erroneous drugs ban, Sakho is determined to give himself the best chance of making Didier Deschamps' squad at next summer's World Cup in Russia.
